Now I'm not an author or anything but...
With that said I would think the best place is at a desk with a pen and paper.
I could be wrong and if so then I'm sorry.

I'm reading a good book called "the artists way". In it, they prescribe a routine of waking up and writing 3 pages every morning. Even if your blocked or cant think of anything 'worthy' to write, you just write. For example if you cant think of anything or feel shit or don't feel like it, you write about that. I think developing a writing routine like this is a good place to start.
Next, find the blogs of your favorite authors and read about what inspires them and how their writing process works.
If you want to write a novella look up story structure, and learn about catalyst, crisis and climax. This should get you started in the right direction. Hope this helps.

Base it off a person from history or even someone you know
I know George RR Martin borrows heavily from medieval history and from those accounts he creates characters and plots much more interesting/intricate than the origin from which they came

I've been working on one for the past couple of years and am only about 150 pages through.
My advice would be, don't rush it. Take the time you need to make the story into exactly what you want. If you really have a story to tell it will get written, even if you only work on it 5 minutes every day. As for the physically hating to write part... that's what drugs are for.

drugs are gonna be a big part of my writing both as story plots and idea catlysts
