Familiarity breeds comfort.
    #18891643 - 09/25/13 10:25 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Why is it that being familiar with something makes us more comfortable with it?

It is a fact that when we are around our friends and our house and even the shroomery for some, that we get comfortable being there, because we are used to it. Why is this the case? I personally like excitement and don't find as much excitement around familiarity. I think the same is true with relationships and the reason that people cheat on their significant others, simply because it isn't exciting to have sex with them anymore, but it more exciting to have sex behind their backs with someone else.

Do humans live for excitement more than comfort in general?

Do you prefer to be comfortable or excited and do you think that gender has any say in the matter?

Is comfort and excitement mutually exclusive?

The words that come to my mind first, complacency, contentedness, predictability.  I think that this logic doesn't apply for every single thing in life.  For example I wouldn't be comfortable or content eating the same thing every day for over a few days.

I think you come to expect and predict certain constants, and when those things change it throws you off.  I think predictability in regards to many things, plays a big roll in complacency.

Definitely. I speak from first hand experience when I say that not knowing what's going to happen from day-to-day is stressful & exhausting. Familiarity breeds predictability & structure, both highly prized by humans. That being said, too much of anything will make you sick, so it's good to have both.

I agree with you guys, but comfort also seems to breed boredom, so would you rather be bored than have excitement ultimately? I guess it might depend on your current situation. it's like people have two sides, a yin and a yang, The yin is like our rational mind that is looking ahead and considering things logically, and the yang is our emotional side that just wants to have fun. Somehow these two sides of our brain maintain a balance, and I think comfort verse excitement exemplifies this with their mutual exclusivity yet their seeming balance. I personally prefer excitement, but at the same time I know enough to use my rational mind to achieve it.

I prefer not one over the other. Both have their time and place.

I think the trick is, making best efforts to not let one interfere with the other.

It will only destroy what you are not.

I think there is a tendency for anything that was once exciting to lose it's lustre and become familiar.  I traveled for a while and initially the experience was exciting.  Now I'm at the point where I've lost most any sense of awe when encountering a new culture, city, landscape, whatever.

This adaptivity goes both ways though, and what was once familiar can be seen again with fresh eyes.

Perhaps the comfort of the familiar comes with conceptualizing the environment we're in.  We mentally streamline the experience of being there, as we have modeled that environment and it has become predictable.  Less effort is necessary to process the environment and it's risks in a familiar space.  If we're comfortable there, we're probably safe there as well.

I don't think comfort and excitement are mutually exclusive, as the terms are somewhat nebulous.  One can be comfortable in a situation which they are generally familiar with, but which will predictably excite them.

If you look at how humans are living in general these days I would say that we vastly prefer comfort and thereby safety  over excitement.  It sounds nice to say one prefers excitement but I don't really see many acting on that.  Plus as one ages comfort and safety become even more the norm.

We like the familiar imo because of safety issues.

I have been skydiving when I was in my late teens... I do enjoy excitement, but as I said in another thread, I would like to live for a very, VERY long time, and pursuing such activities leads to a high risk of death over time.  If you want to stand a good chance of living forever, risk must be reasonably mitigated.

100% this. A lot of people think I'm fairly wild because I like to spend the odd night by myself in the wilderness - and it's not even that risky.

The risky part is driving there and back. :whoa:

True. When it comes to driving you can see the human failure to comprehend things beyond the intelligence it needed in the natural world. Hurtling along at 120km/h is insane, considering the number of potential outcomes that would cause you to stop instantly or near instantly.

Or maybe it's one of the only ways to get a real thrill nowadays and so it's more like us finding an equilibrium of excitement. Chance of getting eater by a bear/tiger being roughly equal to chance of getting smashed to death in traffic?
