my chicks brothers son is being tested for blood cancer
    #18890841 - 09/25/13 07:25 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

a couple weeks ago they had run some allergy tests and when the doctor had explained the results he had used the word abnormally high. he said they were so high that there must be a mistake and he would like to run the test again. results came back high again and ended up scheduling a scratch test. i guess they scratch your back and see if you show signs or some shit.

anyway, the bro called me a little bit ago saying the doc did not run the test because he thought it might be a waste, but he did set them up with a hematologist for next week. he was saying that the doc said that someone with that high of results, but does not show any sort of signs, at all, could be something entirely different. he then said this,

"i want to get some blood work done so we can rule out blood cancer."

what the fuck. what doctor says that?

its pretty shitty cause we are close, family wise, and we have been around the kid since he was born. we are hoping for the best, but i know the brother is taking it pretty hard. ill never understand what hes actually going through, but for me, it doesnt make sense to stress over the unknown. i think if it was more serious the doc would have stressed that.

The doc is just trying to prepare him for the worst just in case.

I'd rather 'em tell me then just say they need bloodwork then I come in for results and I find out I have cancer, I'd be pissed, I'd rather be told it was a possibility from the beginning.

With that being said I hope he ends up okay, he probably will.

What kind of doctor tells you why he's running a battery of tests? What a jerk. He should keep his patients in the dark.

yeah.

the bro did tell that if it does come back clean then he would like to scheduled an appointment every 6 months just to keep an eye on him.

the whole cause in the first place was when he was bit on his head then his hand. the first time he was bit on the forehead but his whole face swelled up. his eyes were literately closed shut for 2 weeks cause it was so bad. the doc said that if it happened again they would need to start running some allergy tests. the second time he was bit on his hand and that damn think looked like it was ready to burst.

During the initial infection, a person may experience a brief period of influenza-like illness. This is typically followed by a prolonged period without symptoms. As the illness progresses, it interferes more and more with the immune system, making the person much more likely to get infections, including opportunistic infections and tumors that do not usually affect people who have working immune systems.

Ya, AIDS can lead to cancer--in particular a rare type called Kaposi Sarcoma--not typically blood/liquid tumors.

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood. Lymphoma is as well. Lymphoma, while a cancer of the blood normal sets up residency in peripheral tissues/organs, while in the case of leukemia they remain in liquid phase (within blood) usually.

The type of response that the OP is describing sounds like an eosinophil or basophil-driven response. These cells are particularly involved in allergic type reactions. Cancers of eosinophil or basophil origin are very rare!

I am a scientist and work in the space (somewhat). Not my direct area of study, but I am familiar with the basics of liquid tumors.

a couple facts...

he was bit by an insect and his face blew the fuck up and resembled the elephant man for a good couple weeks.

about a year later he was bit on his hand and it was 4x its normal size.

between the 1st and 2nd time of being bit with crazy ass symptoms he has been bitten a handful of times with basic symptoms you and i would show.

when they ran the allergy test the results were abnormally high, but the doc thought it was off cause he didnt show the normal signs you would normally have with scores that high. blisters, whelps, rashes...

he was tested again with and scored the same.

other than that, hes lived a normal kid life. nothing out of the ordinary, no crazy ass sickness, hes perfectly healthy on all the other scales. well according from the bro and his other doc appts.
