I'm tired of replacing tyvek and polyfil. I'm curious at the best economical route for sad amount of jars to cut into holes to cover holes on the lids. They are cheap enough to buy a set of 100 but I'd rather be economical, and as much as I can and will figure out the math if need be, just wondering if anyone with experience could throw it out there for me.

You know you don't have to replace Polyfil in lids, right?
If you're going with SFD's, either get plastic lids or use them whole. Metal lids rust out, and then you have to buy more SFDs, which aren't cheap. If you use them whole, you can just replace the lid and keep using the filter pretty much forever. I'm in this situation myself right now, and I'm gonna have to buy about 100 new SFDs.

I applied SFDs to my first few dozen metal lids. I don't see why, when or if my lids rust out, I won't be able to take a razor, peel it off, and RTV silicone it onto another lid.
In fact, in TL's lid tek, he says that's what he does. Why would application to a metal lid be a bad idea?

You can cut a sfd into 6 pieces. As stated the plastic lids work best. Not only do they not rust but they are one piece and one piece lids make g2g transfers easier. Although you can glue a 2 piece metal lid together with silicone but I still prefer plastic

I've reused cut out SFD's. It works like a charm. I just cut away the silicone.
I bought 10 125mm SFD and they make at least 8 lids per disc.

I have read that rtv silicone doesn't work very well in plastic lids, anyway to make it stick like in metal lids?

Make sure to score/scour the area where RTV will be in contact with the lid; you know, just rough it up a bit so there are lots of little cracks for the RTV to seep into.

you mean like using the tip of a scalpel/blade to scratch up the area? Any other way? I'm waiting on some sfds and red tops vacutainers I ordered to prepare some liquid culture/grain lids, never done it before

Hey Guys I'm about to start some truffles for the first time and lately I've been having a few problems with contams so I figured sfd's would be a good thing to have since my tyvek isn't working so well now. I was wandering if anyone knew where I could get the sfd's for a good price maybe like Ebay or amazon. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I agree to use the whole filter disk without cutting, but you certainly don't have to replace metal lids when they rust, nor do you replace the filter disks when they get rust stains on them. Some of my filter disks are disgustingly stained, including rust stains, but still work perfectly. Simply wipe rusty lids and rings with a green scouring pad and keep using.
Plastic lids tend to break easily, and I've also had several pop off when shaking jars, spilling grains all over the place. In addition, you'll get better gas exchange by having a few small holes in the lid, but using the entire surface of the filter disk rather than a small section, which I think is what you said. I just wanted to clarify that. RR

I used a nikel to get a nice template for cutting my SFD's apart. I think I got ~7 per SFD. I think they where 100mm, whatever fits on a wide mouth jar.
Use sandpaper, or a green scouring pad to get some surface roughness going. I use sandpaper on my plastic lids. Then wipe down w/ a bit of alcohol to ensure it's good and clean. Then apply silicone and filter. Should work the same way on a metal lid.
**I'll 2nd the plastic cracking and breaking. So far this has only happened during drilling, but still a PITA.

For circles, if using wide mouth filters, you'll get about 8 circles per disk using a penny to trace lines with.
120/8 = 15. So as crazy as it seems you'll only need about 15 to 20 disks. I use a forstner bit for drilling smooth edges, and the lids last me about 3/4 of a year.

This is what I use. Dirt cheap and Ive reused the same filters 5+ times. Some of them are pretty nasty looking with rust stains and God knows what else but no problems yet.
