tips for building abs

I had a pretty awesome 8-pack last year when I was really skinny (from drugs/mania/insomnia) but it was only from a lack a fat not from lots of muscle and it was only for about a week. By March this year I had gained like 35 pounds from my body yo-yoing after a cycle of almost anorexia. Now in October I am about 18 pounds lighter. These past few months I sleep everyday, I eat healthy foods and I do martial arts/go to the gym three times a week at I run as often I as I can.
Thats all well and good but I am having some trouble getting my abs back. I want to build enough muscle so that it lasts if I ever get out of shape again. I do sit-ups and plank and crunchies on those exercise balls but the next day only the solar plexus part of my stomach is sore. I never feel it in the lower part of the stomach or the sides...
Do you have any tips shroomery on building stomach/core muscle? Like exercises that work that whole region.
Peace.

L-seats and l-seat pullups do it for me. I also get a ton of cardio. I've had defined abs since middle school just because I'm so damn skinny, but they really started to pop once I got into bodyweight workouts. I don't go to a gym, one can make a workout out of any situation.

Uh, what is your issue? Do you not believe me?
If you have lower back pain, you would be amazed how much strengthening your abdominal muscles will do for you. Your lower back is complementary to your abdominals, and if you think about how the muscles work you would realize that. If you have a weak lower back, you're more likely to slouch, which makes your abs look like flabs. With a strong lower back with tight muscle, your abs stick out further and look more cut. You can't get killer abs without a killer lower back. It's all about the midsection, bro.
