Yup an actually real robot.  The future AI's will be outraged that their oldest ancestor's first task is a menial slave chore of serving drinks to carbon lifeforms. But yeah, hes real.

My issue with Linux is that VLC is the only "decent" universal media player.  Ugh just thinking about having to use VLC is making me irritated.  I use my PC for a home theater media center and I do all my TV/movie watching on my PC on my TV so the media player options are a top priority.  If/when PotPlayer is available on Linux I'm switching that day.

Ubuntu and Mint are both good for the first Linux experience since they both have a pretty nicely polished UI.  If you're used to Windows then I'd go with Mint and I'd go with Ubuntu if you're used to OSX.  JMHO.

I've never used redhat but ubuntu has the ubuntu software center that is pretty much a one stop shop for most apps you need.

It sucks, especially in the customization department.  Daum PotPlayer is in every single way better, especially the ability to map out which mouse buttons do what.

Could someone explain to me this drwxrwxrwx shit

There's this chmod command that can be coupled to a 3-4 digit wide octal code to change file/directory permissions throught the root user terminal.

Sometimes I get shit like -r--r--T--  or rw-r--S or something like that. What are the T's and S' for?

Each set of "rwx" stands for "read, write, execute" permission bits for a particular user.  The first group is for the owner of the file, the second group is for the group of the file, and the third group is for everybody.  For example:

rwxrw-r--

Means that:

File' owner: can read, write, and execute the file

File's group: can read and write the file

Everybody else: can only read the file

Each group represents a binary code of three digits.  To set the permissions of a file to be equal to the above would be:

chmod 764 <filename>

The d at the start in your examples means it is a directory.  There are other letters as well that can go on the front (it is called the "sticky" bit), but that's more advanced.  You should do some basic reading on the UNIX filesystem and OS.

:awethumb: now i the three rwx sets

But what about this:

$ ls -l /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /dev/ppp /usr/sbin/exim4
crw------T 1 root root  108, 0 Oct 16 20:57 /dev/ppp
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root    2761 Aug 30 10:38 /etc/passwd
-rw-r----- 1 root shadow  1695 Aug 30 10:38 /etc/shadow
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root  973824 Sep 23 20:04 /usr/sbin/exim4
$ ls -ld /tmp /var/tmp /usr/local /var/mail /usr/src
drwxrwxrwt 14 root root  20480 Oct 16 21:25 /tmp
drwxrwsr-x 10 root staff  4096 Sep 29 22:50 /usr/local
drwxr-xr-x 10 root root  4096 Oct 11 00:28 /usr/src
drwxrwsr-x  2 root mail  4096 Oct 15 21:40 /var/mail
drwxrwxrwt  3 root root  4096 Oct 16 21:20 /var/tmp

I can see s and t (and a c in the first one). What are these letters for?

I'm not exactly sure, but it's something to do with devices.  Notice the  path is /dev  - that means is it a device, and they have a lot of extra / different behaviour from regular files.

Re: Windows 7 vs Linux [Re: pwnasaurus]
    #18890276 - 09/25/13 05:03 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

That was just an example I found while trying to figure out this problem. I decided to try with a simple file

For the purpose I created a file
#touch testfile
#nano testfile (and added some junk as filling, its probably irrelevant tho)

# ls -l
total 4
-rwxr--r-- 1 root root 31 Sep 26 01:45 testfile
# chmod 774 testfile
# ls -l
total 4
-rwxrwxr-- 1 root root 31 Sep 26 01:45 testfile
# chmod 770 testfile
# ls -l
total 4
-rwxrwx--- 1 root root 31 Sep 26 01:45 testfile
# chmod 1770 testfile
# ls -l
total 4
-rwxrwx--T 1 root root 31 Sep 26 01:45 testfile
# chmod 770 testfile
# ls -l
total 4
-rwxrwx--- 1 root root 31 Sep 26 01:45 testfile
# chmod 7770 testfile
# ls -l
total 4
-rwsrws--T 1 root root 31 Sep 26 01:45 testfile

The first digit in the chmod command seems to be optional and only when I decide to add a value corresponding to the first digit you get these T's and S' as you can from what I've done above.
