Double checking numbers for mini-tub

I've grown a few grams using the PF Tek but its time to step things up. I'm going to be using a 20 quart monotub and I just need to double check numbers. I have 2 quarts of WBS, and will be mixing with half a brick of coir and 1 quart vermiculite. Altogether this should all equal out to around 8 quarts correct? Just want to be sure before I go making the holes in the monotub.
Should I figure on 10 quarts just to avoid putting the holes too low? Don't know if its okay for the holes to be an inch or 2 higher than the spawn/substrate, or if its better for them to be right above.

What are the dimensions of the monotub length and width?
Also, a half brick of coir + one quart verm is about 5 quarts. add 2 quarts spawn and you are at 7 qts.
I would guess that it is more than sufficient for a 20qt, but without good measurements, I cannot even guess.

That link was a small writeup on volume calculations for our hobby.

I was thinking about this all yesterday to, i came to the conclusion that I needed a total of 3-4 inches of substrate. That right there told me where my holes went.

Thanks for that link, I'll read it after this. I was a mistaken, its actually a 24 quart tub. The dimensions of the inside of the tub are 13.25" long x 10" wide. Here is a link to the tub I am using although the listed dimensions are way off. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-24-Quart-Modular-Latch-Box-Bamboo/22098544
I'll read through that post you linked in the meantime and try to figure it out.

3-4 inches of substrate, right there will tell you were your holes would be, but it wont really tell you how much material to make.
I've used a 24 quart as well (had a little coir left overs) my recipe was 2.5 quarts of water .5 brick of coir 1 quart of verm and 2-3 quarts spawn.
Hope that helps, my signature picture is of a 24 quart.

Just check it manually. What I do is use my hand as a guide. Place your hand on the side of the tub, near the bottom, palm down, facing horizontally. Line up your pinky finger with the bottom and the tallest point (your thumb knuckle) should be right about the perfect substrate depth. Or use a ruler to find the 4" mark.
Dump quarts of water into the tub until it's at that mark. Count how many quarts you used. Use that much total substrate.

That does help, thank you. Thats almost the exact "recipe" I was going to use. Where did you have the holes cut out on your tub, at around 4 inches? Hopefully I'll get a little miracle going and have an awesome tub of fruits like in your sig.

So 4" seems to be the magic number. Will go do some re-figuring and maybe eventually get my holes cut.
Thanks for all the help guys.

I think anywhere from 2.5 - 4.5" is fine but between 3-4" is optimal

You could use a 1" sub if you wanted, it'd just require a LOT of attention. 4-6" is thick enough so that it doesn't need maintenance in a monotub.

I see. Well I just dumped in a bunch of water and it took 9 full quarts to get me a little over 4" so that'll be my number. Sounds a lot better than the 6" I originally had planned. Thanks again guys, I believe you may have saved me some future grief.

here is the Tek i use for my tubs, for how many holes are to be used.
Also the holes I used are about 1.5 inches.
monotub Tek
It calls for 4 holes at the substrate level, and 2 holes higher up for air circulation.
