mycelium
    #18889539 - 09/25/13 02:14 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

hi, this will be my first time growing mushrooms. i have a jar that looks ready to come out of the jar. i'm not sure if my pictures are clear enough but i see just 1 small pin that's coming out of the jar. i was wondering if you can see if my jar looks ready enough. it's been 5 weeks until it connected threw out the jar. then i gave it another week and a half to make sure it's ready to come out. see what you think.

Your pictures a little dark but if thats a little pin in the second picture, you'll need to birth those soon.

You'll want the full outer side at 100%
Once you see it all covered in mycelium, it should be pretty prone to infection.

I'm not sure you know what that word means.

I think he's trying to say that once the cake is fully colonized it should be pretty resistant to contamination.

Do not take your cakes out of the jars until they are at LEAST fully colonized.  After they are fully colonized you should wait 3 - 7 days before you birth them to allow the mycelium time to 'consolidate' it's hold on the cake.

It's not ready yet.

IF you have a cake that IS fully colonized AND has pins forming then that particular cake can be birthed safely.  I would still wait a little longer though.

Also yes, dunking for 12 - 24 hours helps hydrate the cake.

But why would take a cake out that wasn't 100% ?  You should not take a cake out that isn't ready to be fruited.  If it's not fully colonized then it's not ready to dunk.

No, unless the growth has 'stalled' and you haven't seen any progress for several days.

Just be patient a little while longer.  You're almost there.

I think it will work.  My tubs are on shelves with only a single 150 watt equivalent CFL that shines on the side of the the tubs from above and it works great.  IME at least they don't need a huge amount of light, it's not like indoor plants.  In the past I once had a grow operation in a closet with a single 6-8 inch fluorescent tube and even that worked fine, maybe not great but it did grow fruits.

Light spectrum/color temperature is important. You want something between 5000 and 7000 kelvin for optimal results. 6500k (cool white) bulbs are the most commonly used and recommended. Intensity is not very important, as long as light is getting to the substrate/grow.

i went for 5 businesses for a grow light and no one had. i have some kind of grow light that my family was using for plants. accept it has no specs on it and the box probably got thrown away. how critical is it for the kelvin to be 5000-7000? do all lights have it? should i just use the one that i have or just use indirect sunlight?

You don't need a "grow light" you need a light bulb with the lighting specifications needed.
Sounds like your really new, but all you need is a light fixture ( i bought mine at walmart and also one at a hardware store) they are so simple to find.
On the back on the box will be kelvin scale and it will show you where the bulb is at on the kelvin scale.
You want it to be 6,500, but any light will really do man.
The light bulb will be fluorescent and can be picked up at almost any hardware store plus walmart.
It's extremely easy to find man, look up on the forums and start taking notes.
The search box is GREAT.

Yeah they aren't found in the 'grow light' area.  6500K CFL's are usually found right next to the regular bulbs and they have a regular base like a light socket for a house.

The usually say 'Daylight' spectrum I think.

yeah... i just said i was new at this. i know where to look and walmart home depot and a few other stores dont have it. they said most of them are bought during the spring not the fall. i live in a town not a city. there is a difference. i just found a place that has a light that has close to 4000 kelvin. that's about the best i can do. i guess that will be better then nothing
