Monotub woes....PICS - reply and more questions
    #18889257 - 09/25/13 01:16 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Ok.  I spawned a monotub about 10 days ago.

looked at it today.

fucking GREEN EVERYWHERE!

My jars smelled great when I spawned

My coir was properly pasteurized.

MY TUB PREVIOUSLY HAD A MOLDY SUBSTRATE IN IT.

Do you think I just didn't clean it out well enough?

Is that why this got contamned?

If the substrate was actually properly pasteurized, and you cleaned your tub out well, then I would guess the contam came from one or more of your jars.

I just dumped out the moldy substrate and wiped with 10% bleach.

Well, I have a jar from the same batch that is fruiting in a tray by itself

How did you inoculate? I find its best to use soap with bleach added to it to get things really clean and lift small particles like spores from the plastic. Also, do you feel you were thorough with the bleach?

I didn't have dish soap.  I think that really made all the difference.  And no, I don't think I was thorough with the bleach, because I was "conserving" it for the g2g transfers I had to do.

I hate being in a recession.

So ya.  I'm pretty sure this is because I didn't clean that tub out well enough.  The spores were already in there, and I just gave them some wonderful coir to eat

I was thinking the same thing about using a pressure washer to blast my tubs...anyone have actual experience with this?

Sucks about the tub bro, had the same thing happen before and left me questioning lots of things.

I'm almost positive it was not cleaning the tub properly.

I had left the mold substrate in there for like 3 weeks before I "cleaned" it.  I sprayed it out with hot water and wiped it with a little 10% bleach.

As I was doing that I kept thinking.... I wish I had some dish soap.

Next time liberate a sack from a gas station bathroom, at least you'll have some spore lifting suds... I would!

Antibacterial soap kills bacteria, not mold. You just learned that bleach doesn't kill mold spores. It kills the mycelium and then gives the spores some water.

Next time use alcohol.

That looks way more expensive than alcohol, and I bet they don't effectively do a better job for our purpose. If you get them free, go for it, but I wouldn't pay for it.

I have a tub stained green.  Still use it too.  When I clean my tubs, I dump them outside and use a hose to rinse them and the lid out really well.  Then I spray 10% bleach in and on them.  Wait 20 minutes and take a shower with them using my body soap (dr bronners). Then before I use them I wipe them down with Lysol wipes.

probably. i always lysol my tub down before i put new stuff in it. also, if your mycelium was too old, it might have contributed to not standing up to the mold. hard to say.

as a brewer I learned that plastic holds bacteria quite well in any scratches.  I notice my tubs have many scratches, and if a scratched plastic bucket can make an antibacterial (hops) tea go bad then I'm sure it could make a tub turn south quite easily. This thread is a good reminder about cleaning thoroughly..

I never clean my tubs, even when they contam. I rinse them out and wipe them down and spawn again.

The issue is undoubtedly in your spawn.

Coir is very contam resistant even when unpasteurized.

And mold takes longer than that to germinate, grow, and go green on a portion of your tub.

It was a bad jar :frown:
