Is this a good dehydrator?

Have another batch coming out and am tired of using a window screen on a box fan for drying so I decided to get one of these. It has a variable temp control from 90-160 so I figure I should be able to go a LITTLE warmer without damaging any good active compunds. Anyone have any recommendations on what temp I should use? Just below 140 right? Or is it 120? I am gonna go with probably around 110?? Any help from folks with experience in thi would be much appreciated.

Yes, it's a good dehydrator. Run it at its maximum temperature.

OK....I have seen so many conflicting reports about the effects of temp on potency ehrm I mean flavor as alkaloids degrade under heat. I could imaging short term it would not affect anything, but long term I could see it cause issues with carious compounds if I found some actives out on a hike or something. I may do a test, (if I find some) run a few batches on different settings, store them for 6 mos and 1 year in a fridge and see if there is any difference.

Oh yea that's a good one. I would second using the max heat too. The air is your main enemy. I always try to get them dry asap.

Ok cool. And you mean as far as the air oxidizing the active ingredients and carrying mold spores?

You can talk about psilocybin and active alkaloids here .
You can bake fresh mushrooms on pizza and have a great tasting psychedlic pizza. Psilocybin doesn't start degrading until well over the temperature of a dehydrator. Oxidation is the #1 potency killer, and the increase in oxidation due to heat of the dehydrator is going to be better than fan drying for multiple days.
Here's the thing: if dehydrators killed potency you wouldn't see every Trusted Cultivator, and a large portion of your every day cultivator using one.

I'm not worried about mold spores. I figure there's a few thousand of them already on the shrooms from being fruited in open air.
The quicker they're dry the quicker they stop degrading. When they're done sporulating, or picked they go into decay mode.
Wiki also states the melting points of the Psilocin and Psilocybin are over 400F

160*F is fine. They'll dry quick. Just don't let them sit in there for hours and hours after they're totally dry.

428–442 °F right on the article sourced from
the 11th edition merck index. http://www.amazon.com/The-Merck-Index-Eleventh-Edition/dp/B0036FBD2K http://www.rsc.org/Merck-Index/monograph/mono1500008035/psilocybin?q=unauthorize You need to login to see a full monograph though.

This info gets repeated daily...
The actives in muchrooms dont break down until FAR past 300F, while most dehydrators never make it past 165F.
I use my dehydrator that gets to 150F+ for 12-24 hours and I get completely dry fruits with no potency loss.
