Ketamine
    #18888672 - 09/25/13 10:37 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hi, I originally was on here because I was concerned about another poster's benzo use.  I still worry about him!  Anyway I have a doctor wanting to give me ketamine  infusions for so called "treatment resistant depression"--anyone know anything about ketamine?

And I am a newbie.  From the state of Georgia, married 8 years, no kids, the rest is in my signature.

But anyone know anything about ketamine infusions?

Yes, it definitely can work much better than traditional methods like SSRI's.

I hate SSRI drugs.  Despise them.  They do nothing for me and are hard to get off of.  That is where ketamine came into the discussion.

Scientific American just published a major 3-part article about ketamine for depression.  Also, the Ketamine Advocacy Network is comprised of people who suffered major depression and/or bipolar for years or decades, and experienced incredible relief via ketamine infusions.  They are fighting to make this treatment widely available.  Check out their website for a directory of U.S. doctors who offer the treatment.  Within a few days, their discussion forums will be active, in order to address questions just like yours.  See links below.

A small number of researchers are resisting the use of ketamine for depression because they think it needs more study to assess the consequences of long-term use, and they think the dissociative effects (mild hallucinations) during the 40-minute infusion are unacceptable under any circumstances.  To people who have suffered extreme depression for years and might be suicidal, those are ridiculous arguments when you weigh them against the extreme, unbearable pain of depression.  Ketamine has been safely used in the medical profession for 50+ years, and the doctors who actually treat patients with ketamine are easing immense suffering.  Ketamine treatment is literally saving lives, and rescuing sufferers from lives of misery.

GirlfromGA, can you please share the name of your doctor who is willing to provide the infusions?  (by PM if you prefer)

Hi all just saw that someone wanted the name of the ketamine doc.  No issue.  He is on TV all the time--Dr. Keith Ablow.  keithablow.com.  Since he has gained some popularity (and of course some of it is terribly negative) I do not mind posting his name on the board.  I will say this.  His actual "counseling" skills blow me away.  They are helping me (I feel in a dark dark place) and I currently speak to him two hours a week.  Just that is starting to bring me peace.  But yes his main thing is this ketamine.  I have to go see him in Boston next week cause I am gonna do it...

GirlfromGA, good luck next week!  I think you are doing the smart thing by trying the infusion as your doctor advises.  Are you actually getting the infusion next week, or just having a prep appointment?  Please let us know the results afterward.

Ketamine can definitely be psychedelic, no question.  I think you are referring to the fact that as a drug it is classed as a dissociative anesthetic.  Psychedelic is by no means official nomenclature for specific drugs.  Ketamine can most certainly be psychedelic as anyone who has done any decent amount of it can attest.

There are more people imprisoned for the commission of drug offenses in the United States - close to 500,000 - than are incarcerated in England, France, Germany, and Japan for all crimes combined.  Examined in another way, the United States has 100,000 more people incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses than all the countries of the European Union combined, despite the fact that the European Union has 100 million more citizens. :crankey:

I always thought ketamine was highly addictive.. Wouldn't that be counter-productive for someone with a history of addiction?

Not if used in a clinical setting with other therapeutic modalities also being utilized.

In a clinical setting, he very well may be right. I'm hoping it works out for you! Depression is a fickle bitch.
