How do YOU read?

While reading, do you visualize every scenario in your head like a movie? Or do you just gather and analyze the concepts?
Do you read what a character says like how you imagine they would actually say it? Do you ever empathize with a character's feelings?
When you find a word you don't know, do you cut out your reading flow and grab the dictionary?
After how many pages/minutes/hours can you read until you lose your concentration and you can't stop thinking about other jive?
And what type of media do you usually read?
I'm curious

I'm not very good at creating actual visuals of what I read, so I tend to just analyse words. I mostly read non-fiction these days, since I don't find myself very engaged by most fiction anymore. I usually don't find myself capable of empathy for written characters, either.
When I am reading fiction, I'm usually reading out loud in my head, if that makes sense. I have a high tolerance for long reading sessions and I tend to be very focused when I'm giving my undivided attention to any one thing, and it's not unusual for me to finish books in one sitting if I've got the time for it.

I can read for hours and hours, usually I daydream whatever Im reading. If its good. If its some stuffy highbrow shit I can usually go an hour or two before my focus starts to wane. After that most of the info just slides right through. With fiction I give them voices, mannerisms, I create them in my mind, and when I really get into it I stop seeing the book all together, I get completely lost in my mind and I lose all track of time. Goddamn, now I wanna read.

I read fiction and I like to visualize and get very detailed imagery. If I'm reading crap then I just blow through it at 300MPH. I had a college reading level in fifth grade. I also tend to speed read when asked to read out loud, it's just a habit. oh I can also go on all day reading if the material is engaging.

I gather the words and analyze the concepts without any real visualization. Maybe a little but nothing like a movie.
As shitty as it sounds, self-help is something I spend most of my time reading about. Not shit like 5 pounds in 5 days. But books about introversion and the correlation between neuroscience and Buddhism. I wish I was more interested in things that don't apply to me and my problems.
When I see a word I don't know, sometimes I look it up and sometimes I don't. It depends on how I lazy I feel.
And I can't read from a book for long without losing my concentration. Maybe around 40 minutes at most. And that's pushing it. But I can sit down and read forum posts until my eyes hurt. I think reading all these short forum posts all the time has made me become accustomed to small bits of information and screwed up my concentration.

How the fuck do YOU read, OP?
pretty much this. he nailed my reading experiences since ... forever. teacher says ... close your eyes and imagine a red beach ball....i can sorta get a picture of a red ball, but its fuzzy ... and always with a solid black backdrop.
so, lets say when a novel is describing a particular scenario; said characters of said story, while visualized and otherwise 'there' in my head are usually no more than actors on a very sparse, barren theater stage.
so a more analytical reader than a visual one. but even so, i greatly enjoy reading anything i can. i remember when i was a kid i would read the dictionary while i pooped.

i do actively visualze, especially when the author spends a lot of detail on a scene. otherwise i just get lost in the story and im sort of visualizing and reading without realizing it. if i have trouble focusing, i read the worlds loudly in my own head

you sob.
i want your powers
While reading, do you visualize every scenario in your head like a movie? Or do you just gather and analyze the concepts?
i visualize everything, naturally. if there is not much depth in a book all i will see is numbers. could be why im very picky with books.
Do you read what a character says like how you imagine they would actually say it? Do you ever empathize with a character's feelings?
yes, and yes. its like i become the characters.
When you find a word you don't know, do you cut out your reading flow and grab the dictionary?
yes, most of the time. unless i am reading something very exiting in the book.
After how many pages/minutes/hours can you read until you lose your concentration and you can't stop thinking about other jive?
it depends how much i like the book in its first pages. if all i read is nonsense i will close the book right there and there. if i love the book i can stay up all night to morning reading.
And what type of media do you usually read?
media?

When you guys visualize a story, do you create an entirely new labdscape in your head? Or do you adopt places that you've been to or seen in a movie before?
I do the latter.

I do visualize the scenes I read but I visualize more into what I think characters are like. I always hear the character's voice in my head depending on whoever is speaking and I greatly emphasize with certain characters. Hemingway's characters are a great example because I feel like I easily relate to them.
I don't really go on massive reading binges ever.. Around a half hour at a time or so.
On that note though, I suffered a huge brain injury that had me in the hospital for a long time and even in the hospital, I was reading. After I was released I was going on these binges that lasted hours of just reading and drinking coffee.
I'm mostly going back to square one with the shorter reading marathons but for some reason, they were definitely there when my brain was recovering.

in that case, my preferred media is all of the above.
When you guys visualize a story, do you create an entirely new labdscape in your head? Or do you adopt places that you've been to or seen in a movie before?
i think it is the former for me. i never really thought about that, but yes it seems that i create entirely new worlds.

I'm a highly visual reader. However, I intentionally force myself to read much slower than what's necessary for comprehension/retention because it allows more time for things to play out in my mind's eye, making reading a thoroughly more enjoyable experience. I can read faster and visualize later, but I tend to bastardize the content and lose focus/daydream more often when I do.
I also use different narrative voices in my head depending on the material.
For the readers considering themselves less visual, does the rate at which you read affect your ability to visualize?
A lot of people see improvements in reading comprehension with different kinds of visualization exercises, at least the people who don't have "photographic memories" of the text they've read. I used to just be able to store text verbatim to memory but the older I get the more difficult it becomes.

I do the latter.
A combination of both. I would think that's how most people do it but idk.
