Need some help getting started on a new approach at life
    #18886940 - 09/24/13 09:59 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So I'm (mentally) coming out of a year and a half long drug binge and I'm realizing that this social life I have worked for is not the path to my happiness.  I just returned to college after failing two years in a row and taking a year off just working to get a degree in Wildlife & Fisheries (more aimed towards the wildlife part of it).  The thing I'm having trouble with is free time.  Most of my childhood my parents told me what needed to be done and I just did it.  I got used to everything being set and ready for me to just DO.  I try hard and I was physically fit and pretty smart, so i usually did pretty well in whatever I did.  My free time until high school ended was mostly taken up by soccer even tough I have no desire to pursue a career in it.  I also developed a sort of addiction to gaming.  I didn't start doing 6+ hour sessions or so until late high school but by then I just got way too fond of having mental effort displayed so well while the body got to just sit and relax with minimal effort.  This habit ended up distracting me completely from school once I would get back to my dorm/room.  I would listen pay attention and contribute in class but outside of class it was just gaming and gaming friends.

Since then I've all but stopped doing anything physical that isn't part of work or school.  I'll do a few pushups and crunches from time to time in my room but that's the most I can remember doing for the past year or so.

I want to get into something that has real world benefits this time, though.  I was thinking Muay Thai but I have no idea how to get started training to be ready for when I actually go to a gym and ask to be taught it.

First, I would like to ask if anyone else has any suggestions for a sport or physically exerting activity that might help me get a new social life that isn't based on drugs.  I like nature and after 18 years of soccer I have strong leg muscles so if it's primarily a leg sport I'm already interested.  On the other hand, I would like to get a better upper body so I'm open to anything really.  I have a minimum wage job and car but I don't make much so if it's expensive then forget it.  After college I would like to end up working with animals, specifically mammals.  Any ideas on jobs or activities that could help me pursue that goal are welcome.

Second, what has been a primary motivating factor for stopping with your old life?  As I have said I have a bad habit of just coming home, sitting down at the computer and doing nothing the rest of the night but play games, watch videos/movies and surfing the web.  I have made plans in my head to do night runs, but I never end up acting upon them.  I end up getting too stoned or too interested in what I'm currently watching/playing to get up and do what I know, logically, is a healthier choice.

Third, does anyone have tips for how to study as a visual learner?  I have Concerta prescribed to me which helps with studying math and writing papers, but it doesn't seem to be helping as much as I had hoped with biology.

Run. Its so easy, and you feel the benefits immediately. Just 20 minutes a day. 2 miles. I'm sure you've spent well over 20 minutes on the shroomery today, so you know you have time.

My life changed when I quit smoking cigarettes, and I dramatically decreased my alcohol and weed intake. Suddenly I could wake up in the morning, and I felt good, I could breathe and I could talk to people, and I had dreams and motivations again. I felt like I was moving forward instead of killing myself.  I got into the habit of running by waking up, grabbing a piece of toast, and going before I had a chance to get distracted by anything.

Just go. Right now. Just go run around the block, nice and easy, you'll feel great and all you have to do is put shoes on and walk out the door. Go. Go now.

Thank you.  I just ran 1.3 miles (around my block) and it felt great.  Probably the first time I've run for longer than a couple minutes in over a year.  I had to walk a couple times during the run to catch my breadth but that okay.  Interval running is supposed to be better for you anyways.

That's a good start but I have tried running a few times over the years and the problem I always 'run' into is that I get bored of it once I get my stamina to where I want it to be.  I start slacking and saying I'm too tired or w/e to do it and end up turning that day off into two days etc etc.  Maybe I should try changing up my routes?  I've never really run 'to' anywhere so maybe that's something I can try.  Running to a nice park or something and smokin' a doobie.
Any other, more objective oriented ideas?

That's great. The more you do it the easier it gets, the further you go, the better it feels.
I kinda have the opposite problem. I always tell myself that my run is just chill cross training, relaxing recovery where I don't want to hurt myself, then I end up pushing the whole time. Change up the distance. Go backwards. Jump over stuff along the way. Sprint for the finish.  There are all kinds of things you can do to make it interesting.. I for one feel like I notice something new in my neighborhood each time I go.
Stoned runs are fun. That's the thing. I do it because it feels good, seriously simply totally -so much fun to just be a fast critter on the prowl- good. You don't need any objective other than that.
