Condensation in grain jar (pictures)
    #18882176 - 09/23/13 08:28 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello all. I have some rye grain qt jars that are getting condensation inside, specifically where mycelium is colonizing it and at the top. No water pooling in the bottom, but I am curious if this condensation pictured will cause any problems?

Jars are kept at room temperature, approximately 78 degrees. No condensation in the jars initially, so I can only assume this is occurring because of the heat given off from the mycelium colonizing?

Also, I have never shaken grain jars before, and have read conflicting information whether or not it speeds up full colonization time. This jar has not halted in growth, but what are your opinions on shaking it to speed up the colonization? My other reason for possibly shaking is to distribute the moisture from condensation throughout the jar.

Thanks everybody...happy growing!

Condensation is normal.
Those jars really need to be shaken.

You should only shake once at 25-30% and your jars should finish up in 2-4 days

Thanks man...I've put it in my notes. Started growing about 5 years ago, then took some time off. Recently built a laminar flow hood, so I will be getting into G2G, agar work, and some more advanced mycology practices for the first time...so don't be surprised if you hear from me again asking some advice.

Hey PrinceShroom...not on topic to the original post, but you have experience using WBS? And if so, do you prefer it to grain? I've read a ton of teks using WBS as opposed to grain, and thinking about giving it try. Currently have about 60 lbs of rye grain, so it will be a while.

Yea ive used lots and lots of different shit for grain.  I prefer rye over WBS.  If you 60 lbs of rye and its that accessible I would stick with it.  WBS you have to have a certain finesse to get it right.  Rye comes out perfect every time.

Right on. Yea, I'm pretty partial to rye at this point...just looking to experiment I suppose. But if it's not broken, I'm not going to try and fix it. Thanks man.

Oh man, there is zero reason to fear WBS.

I love it. It provides more inoculation points than rye and is easy to prep if you follow the right technique for your seed. For most people, WBS is cheaper than rye as well.

Here is my favorite WBS prep.

As has been said, shake jars at 20-30% colonization, it really speeds it along. Looks good!

Thanks for the link to the tek. I plan on trying WBS, just not sure when I will get around to it. It makes sense about the different inoculation points with more total surface area. When I do get some going I will let you know how it goes. I use very sterile practices and my contamination rate is super low, so I am pretty confident in trying new things. Love to learn. Thanks for the information, Frank.

Im sorry to chime in a bit off topic from the OP, but what the hell, the question has been answered...
On the topic of WBS; I agree it has been better for me than Rye, however, only on one occasion. By that I mean. The first WBS bag I bought was some blend for finches, and man did I ever love using it! After that bag, I forgot where I bought it or what brand it was... Next 2 bags were a real bitch to use. I thought maybe it was because they contained corn but I read postings of other ppl using corn blends so I dunno. Went back to rye and wheat... So much more expensive though :frown:

If the WBS contains cracked corn or (to a lesser extent) whole corn kernels, you don't want to boil it at all. Only heat to a simmer then dump into the strainer as described in my tek I linked above.

This will prevent a lot of starch from spilling on to your grains, making a sticky mess.

Ya, that seems to be the issue. Too much mother effin starch. I'll try the simmer when I run out of my current rye supply. Thanks bro!

I was just at the local store and picked up a reasonably priced 20lb bag that contained millet, milo, wheat, and sunflower seeds. No cracked corn. Would I want to remove the sunflower seeds?

I remove them because I skim off the floaters and they float.

No reason other than I don't like black spots in my jars

They will be fine if you leave some of them.

I use WBS with anything in it.  Ive had nuts, pieces of fruit, lots of different shit in WBS.  I have never really had an issue with it either.  I just soak.  Turn on the stove to high and bring the water just to a boil and turn it off and strain and rinse the birdseed well.  Let dry and load.

WBS isnt hard.  You have rye down well though why start a new process?  If its just to do it a couple times to learn how then I understand, but id really just stick with the rye.

Yea, it would mainly be to get the experience and to be able to spread accurate information throughout the mycology community based on experience as well as research.
