Substrate Options for Oyster Grow
    #18874556 - 09/22/13 02:15 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I have about 8kg of wheat that will be colonised with Pleurotus citrinopileatus in a few days, but I have ran out of sugarcane mulch, and am unable to get any more. What are some alternative growing subs?

I have plenty of coir
I also have some recycled paper cat litter in pellet form
And lots of hardwood shavings
Plus about 40 litres of vermiculite

Pick up a bag of fuel pellets at Lowe's or somewhere.  Toss in some of those shavings you have, plus some gypsum and some wheat bran.  There you go.  I don't know about cat litter pellets; never tried.  But oysters love sawdust!

sounds good if you mix it all up!  maybe throw some supplements in if you can afford them and are sterilizing.

Cat litter pellets are likely pine. Leave out. Coir and shavings with wheat is all you need.

no, the litter pellets are >99% recycled paper, and chemical-free. However after a test soak, they appear to take up a lot of water, so I don't think they will be appropriate. I'll play around with combinations of coir and shavings. To clarify, sterilising the hardwood refuse is only required if I supplement with bran, yes?

Correct. Otherwise pasturize and don't forget the gypsum.

Golden Oysters taste great. They are my favorite edible. I don't think using a different substrate will change the flavor, compared to how I have grown them many times before (on sugarcane bagasse)

hmmm, well the regular store Agaricus, portabello, swiss brown etc. Also shiitake, king oysters, brown oysters, those slender japanese ones (enoki?) and regular brown/white oysters.

I will admit that I dont live in a country where chanterelles grow or are sold, so my 'favorite edible' may be surpassed if I ever end up trying those. But for now the golden oysters are my fave

It's unlikely that we're in the same country, but if you're in Australia then sure, I can sort you out with a culture, but I'm not posting overseas. Otherwise, there would be thousands of people in the USA or Europe that should be able to help a brother out. It's a common one amongst gourmet growers I believe

I too would be keen on some culture. I'm in Brisbane. PM me.
