Karo-Syrup, 4 hour mycellium!

My friend is very excited at this discovery. In his syringe he saw floating not millions of small spores, but 1 big ball of spores (about 1mm by 1mm). He shook up the syringe, but not that well. The ball seperated into maybe 100 peices. These peices were still pretty damn big. He innoculated 1 cc into a karo syrup jar (with 2 teaspoons of syrup) at 12 pm. He looks now, at 4pm, and he sees mycellium forming through the spaces combining the spores! There is mycellium all over each spore ball. Just 4 hours. Wow this stuff is good. (He knows its not a contam because the mycellium is forming on the balls of black spores)

Ok, lemme get this straight. When you use the Karo to create a myceliem network, this becomes your medium by which you then innoculate your substrate? Once the mycelial network forms within the syrup, can you just suck the whole mess of glop up into a syringe and use that just like you'd use a spore syringe?

I've done a bit of reading, but it didn't quite make sense to me...

Yup thats right. Some people recommend sucking it in and out to break it up before. When mycellium forms in the karo its a lot more liquidy than in the verm or anything like that.

When the mycellium is fully formed you can refrigirate it in a airtight ziplock bag to keep it from spoiling longer. However, while its growing you wouldn't want to refridgerate it because it would stop or greatly slow mycellial growth.

By the way, I don't know if this makes a difference (probably doesn't) but I used Karo with Real Vanila.

I've seen it growing on the spore material too, including mush pieces I'm trying to clone.

My friend is going to introduce a couple of different karo samples to popcorn tonight!

Question: Could plain white granulated sugar be used in the place of Karo or Honey? I ask because Karo doesn't exist in the UK (I think) and Honey makes the solution cloudy, and has insoluble components that can make identification of contaminants difficult.

look for clear corn syrup that should be available there it just may not be karo brand

any sory of cheepie Flavorite corn syrup will work. i believe corn syrup is a necesity in every country for baking.

4hrs. is cool... usually i don't see any activity for about 2 days... then it's off to the races. I love Lc's
