Is this a truffle?
    #18885494 - 09/24/13 03:45 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hi,

I was walking, and found this stuck to a tree, at the bottom.
I thought it might be a truffle, any ideas?

No, it is a Daldinia species.

They are also called Cramp Balls.

where did you find it? state/environment?

truffles grow underground typically and usually have a sort of geode inner, where there are spaces/cavities

im fairly sure what you have isnt a truffle at all

Ah yes it's definitely cramp balls, thanks!
Can you eat these? Or are they valuable or special?

They are inedible, it appears.  However, I was surprised to learn that the common name "Cramp Cakes" does not stem from them being inedible.  Instead, it is said that you can carry them in your pants pocket to releive a leg cramp.... Interesting, and since they make good tinder, they also have a common name "Coal cakes".
