cross one off the list!! Conocybe/Pholiotina smithii !!
    #18884674 - 09/24/13 12:08 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I am so fucking stoked to finally have a new species under my belt! Its been a few seasons . And to now have both cyanopus and smithii is icing on the cake! And C smithii was one of the original species I ever knew about from the audobon books 20 years ago!!
So its been on my list for a long ass time! But up until now, I am pretty sure this species has never been documented in BC until today! :awedance:

Because I know cyanopus so well I knew right away what I was seeing. Habitat was in woodchips in the middle of a dirt road up in the mountains. I will try to record exact elevation later.
Stipes are showing blue bruising at the base and up the stem in older specimens. There is about 10-20 pins coming up so I will try to get more pics later.

This was one of my gym spots where like 10 piles of woodchips were dumped in the bush.

And just to make it really sink in on the fucking dangers of these, right in the same middle section of this dirt road was a patch of bad ass Pholiotina ,either filaris or rugoso.I cant tell the dif. But serious they were almost growing together. I picked one smithii only like 12 inches from the deadly patch!!! I only knew the smithii from my experience, but knock the ring off the filaris/rugoso and to an untrained to even pretty well trained eye it hard to tell.

My camera bag is by the deadlies and the grocery bag is by the main smithii patch !!!! :zombie3:

Dude I find them in habitats just like that one, where wood-chips and grass/plants meet, they never seem to far in either direction but always where the two micro-habitats overlap. Awesome find, I've heard they are pretty potent little buggers. :discorex:

If a semi noob who had experience with psilocybes found the largest patch of bluing Conocybes and threw away all the ones that did not blue intensely and still had enough to get high would that even be bad.  Just a hypothetical situation that I imagine people having different ideas about.

By the way, what other mushrooms do you find in your cyanopus patches, because I have hunted a bunch of grassland species, and know vaguely the different types of lawns that support different things in the PNW and just wonder to know what lawns to look in or grasslands to look in or whatever.  Soccor fields?  New apt complexes?  Office blds? thanks for any help.  Cyan season hasn't started and I like the excitement of rare species so I am just trying to get the best information I can so I don't have to look in any and every habitat until I find what I want.

I would not even eat them if I found them.  I can find safer ones easily and only like taking  relatively low doses once in a while.

Sorry, didn't mean to single you out, just a pet peeve of mine.  Putting the cart before the horse like that is why there are so many observations at MO called something like Coprinopsis lagopus which are probably something else. :crankey:

Joust is the most experienced and closet person to him, I vote he do it....
Can I do that? Well anyway, I nominate joust to do it.
They really look a lot like the smithii I've had microscopy done on a few times, I would be willing to bet $10 2:1 to any takers that they are indeed smithii.

Awesome find! Crazy about the P/C. rugoso/filaris growing almost with them. The first time I found P. cyanescens I was holding a deadly Conocybe/Pholiotina I'd just picked to look at and looked down and almost tripped over a clump of cyanescens.

I could be wrong but I think those deadly guys are Pholiotina rugoso, I believe P. filaris has a darker stipe and a paler annulus, but that could be backwards.

Yes your absolutely right. I should say potential C smithii.

Paul Kroeger is going to scope them here locally but id definetly like someone from here to do it too, preferably someone who can do really accurate measurements as that is the only difference between smithii and cyanopus.
You wonder if maybe they are the same , only measured by 2 different people .
DNA would be interesting.

Sorry, didn't mean to single you out, just a pet peeve of mine.  Putting the cart before the horse like that is why there are so many observations at MO called something like Coprinopsis lagopus which are probably something else. :crankey:

Seriously, though, who's going to scope these?

Joust is the most experienced and closet person to him, I vote he do it....
Can I do that? Well anyway, I nominate joust to do it.
They really look a lot like the smithii I've had microscopy done on a few times, I would be willing to bet $10 2:1 to any takers that they are indeed smithii.

Joust would do a good job, but I never feel right suggesting someone do so much hard work when they probably got many of their own collections to scope.

:awepreciation: I would be happy. im set up sweet now, it will take me a day or so to get fully up and running, ill be posting more, school just started and just got somewhat done moving, just got a desk so im golden now. I am happy to scope any collection really. its always cool getting mail from all over! my friends get jealous that i get awesome psilocybin mushroom collectins from all over to play with, as well as others of course =) . Id be happy to do it. I think today will be a good hunt, i forgot my memory card yesterday ona  short walk.. but im going to try and slay this morning before class. then scope!

Yes it is a bit scary eh!! They were super close.
I think your right with rugoso.
