mushroom ID
    #18879586 - 09/23/13 08:25 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello
I recently came on to these forums to ask for an ID on a mushroom I picked. Was very pleased to have one of your expert guys here help me out but he just wasn't sure if the mushroom in question was that of a Liberty Cap, but felt pretty sure.
I threw it out just in case but was told to keep eyes open look for more.I have done and was in luck coming back home with what I believe are 8 libs. Quite pleased to say the least.
Just really wanting someone to ID these again for me. I found them on grassy field slope facing North, with tall grass, animal poo near by and it had been raining for afew days
England of course, need you ask.
Mushrooms were found growing from moss though so idont know if these are lib caps 100% which is why I have left off eating them till I know for sure. They are bell shaped, stems matching the colour of the caps, and each has an orangey/yellow nipple at the top. Under gills smallish looked a light brown in colour but have since dried darker.Did  spore test came out purple/browny/pink. I have attached photos -really sorry for the quality it is naff but sadly I don't have any other cameras in the house. Thanks anyway

Possibly Libs. Get any better pics?

See if your camera has a macro mode (might be indicated with a flower icon) or a "touch to focus on a specific item" mode. Many cell phone cameras have at least one of these options, and either should give sharper pictures than these.

hello...got hold of a better camera so i'm hoping this works. Here are three of the eight I picked, the others all look like these. Also the middle one has now slight blue bruises on which you can't tell very well from this picture.
Hope this helps ID of them. As I say I am almost 100% sure these are indeed the real deal. Bellshaped caps, bruising blue, found in field with animal poo, nipple on each of them. Thanks!

I guess so but i'm pretty sure it isn't a haymaker mushroom or alike. When picked these hada definite orange/yellow nipple on the top of the cap, very pronounced. As far as I am aware of nothing which grows in fields in the UK has the classic nipple, bell shaped cap which look like libs. I'm pretty sure these are the real thing and I didn't just go picking any LBM I saw which would be foolish

On this evidence I can only say it's possible, when you go out again please try for focus in situ. Since 8 is not many but you don't want to chuck them needlessly I should think hold on to these and when you get an ID on something else you can compare them. But maybe someone else can see it more clearly.

These appear to all have a tinge of blue. Especially the one on the bottom.

Yes Divo, they do but I noticed it the most on bottom one. They have dried correct colours too. Would you say these are likely lib caps? Not trying to put you on the spot here though

That latest picture looks like Psilocybe semilanceata, but they aren't very good pictures.  You're going to need to have a full detailed description, most likely, when the pictures don't turn out.

I cant say with 100% certainty, but the blue/black stems got thinking me they are.

Can you collect more?

Yeah sorry the picture quality it's by great. Taken with my new HTC phone.. Certainly not a camera of my choice. I couldn't say more then I did really only that they were growing on grassy slope well used by cattle, that they grew from moss like stuff and seemed to be just starting to grow. Oh they are about 1 inch in length, wavy stems.
Definitely had very pointy bobbles on top of caps in orangey yellow. I just hope they are libs because I researched so much before I went off exploring for them. Anyway thanks for your help! Such good thing there are you helpful people on here

I couldn't see any more that day so i jjust picked what we saw. I actually threw away one mushroom as it was the same as others but looked more translucent and orangey. Again this could have been a juvenile but I wasn't willing to take the chance. The middle one definitely does have bluish bruises to it

They look like Liberty caps to me.

This is the conclusion I have reached. I'm pretty sure of it unless here in UK we have identical lookalikes. If I do take these I'll brew em in a tea and maybe add mint which is easy on the stomach in case of stomach pain from them

No don't do that.  Get better pictures macro mode of the gills, and take spore prints, especially if you are eager to eat them...DON'T ever guess on that.  It's just a really important rule.
