Fundamental Music Genre List
    #18881918 - 09/23/13 07:30 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So I'm having trouble, I like to categorize things into a clear, clean cut defined order and I'm having trouble doing so with music. I just started getting heavily involved in music, just picked up a guitar and started singing as of late. When I started experimenting with psychoactives I spent days and days of research into the categorization of them and understanding the effects and the categories behind them. That said, I'd love to be able to categorize music. I'd love a list of the fundamental genres. No hip hop AND rap. No rock AND metal. No country AND blue grass. No folk AND traditional. Just a list of the FUNDATMENTAL types of music. In other words, no subcategories. Maybe if its possibly to narrow it down to six categories, that would be awesome. I'd really appreciate your help and input, shroomery. Over and out!

There are no "fundamental genres". You also need a lot of clarification for your question to make more sense.
It also doesn't make sense to omit broad genres that encompass a massive portion of music composed in the last hundred years.

Not to mention, almost every genre is going to be able to trace its stylistic origins back to yet another genre. In an attempt to label a handful of "fundamentals", you're essentially going to be on a futile journey to track down ever-increasingly obscure roots that have all but died out in the modern musical lexicon.

If anything, folk and traditional would be the most fundamental genres in the influence of popular composition for over a century now, so I'm not entirely sure that you understand your own premise here.

I do and it's complicated, that I will admit.

It's also really simple, I desire to classify the most prominent sound that produced sub genres. For instance, we know that rock created a million different classifications. Obviously rock is a fundamental genre. Classical also has many sub genres so I would consider that a fundamental genre. I guess what I'm asking for is for someone to help me compose a list of what I would personally consider a fundamental genre as so I don't leave anything out or overlook a genre that I may be interested in studying in the future. I would like I know more about the different genres of music but to know more I would like to start at the roots of the ones I believe that I may be most interested in. Does this help clarify what I'm asking? Sorry, I understand it is kinda absurd. I'm just asking for help from folks who might be more knowledgable about the different genres.

I understand what you're asking for and if I have the free time, I'll do you one better and make you a flow chart of evey conceivable genre I can think of to trace back both stylistic origins and derivative genres of the big genres.
That would probably more efficient for musical exploration than just a few enormously broad blanket terms.

That's pretty much it there but I would add blues, Symphonic... oh and Dubstep.

Sub genres exist for a reason. Elvis and Cannibal Corpse are both "rock" but they couldn't be further from each other.

I would really appreciate that. That would be really awesome so that I could go through them all and pick the ones I find most interesting to learn about. Anychance you went to some musical theory classes? ;P haha.

I understand that they are there for a reason but I'm looking at the basic principles behind a certain a genre, a certain criteria, if you will, that sub genres were founded upon.  Also, electronic is cool but it doesn't interest me and I personally believe dub step is just a fad but hey, that's just me. I don't think of either as a core or vital genre that I should study. Also, I am more interested in music with history. I'm young but I'm kind of old school for my generation.

You should read some of Gould's work on Taxonomy. It would speak to your love of categorization and possibly to any shortfalls that sVs is on to

I will look into that. I love metal by the way however I don't think it deserves in own category. It's another sub category of rock albeit one of the most bad ass subcategories...

It's all arbitrary anyway. The one fundamental genre of music is "waves that vibrate the eardrum."

So that I can study the roots and the basic practices of certain genres that I like.  I want to get to the core of the music that I am interested in so that i can then go down the line of sub genres and decide what I am interested in. music is a very complex animal and i am trying to make it more simple by studying the basics first, i think studying the basic core principles is the most important way to gather information for me, a beginner. The fundamental practices that were tthe basis of the more presice sub genres. I personally prefer to know the core of a genre than know the names of a thousand sub genres and jump into studying one of them. It would be confusing and backwards in my opinion.

Plus, I mean say I'm setting up my ipod. also, say that im interested in classical, rock, country, blues and jazz. I'd rather scroll through that short list rather than go through 21 sub genres. It'd be a cluttered clusterfuck.

When you look up rock there is a typical base sound. For instance, rock typically has a guitar, singer, bass, and drummer. Occasionally there are other instruments in the mix but that is the basis for the most basic form of rock. There is a principle that most music is governed by. It's not set in stone but its there. I am just interested in learning. I mean I could say all fruit is just fruit or I could classify them on principles like where they are found and what family of plant they derive from. I don't want to buy a huge basket of random fruit and eat a bite of everyone at a time I want to find the ones that I will find the most interesting and would like to get involved in within the future.
