Dear Kratom,

I've been numb for so long that I forgot how to feel
So I don't care if it will break my heart,
Just fuck me till I disappear

Ubuntu linux: firefox, openoffice by default, you can customize it to look 100% like win7 if you want - you won't be able to see a difference in any programs (someone leaked the win7 theme)

ubuntu is very secure, almost impossible to get a virus on (no need for antivirus that slows down your pc), gets faster the more time you use it (due to updates), never gets slowed down from installing new programs usually (unlike windows)

Debian linux: ubuntu done right

haven't tried win7 much yet, but it was confusing for me and I've used many windows, xp,vista,2000,me,3.11,98,95
wasn't easy to setup a network printer between 2 pcs that actually worked

the reasons for GNU/linux is ussually:
freedom(free software vs windows that is proprietary), customizeability, better office/surf experience, more secure

windows is usually better if you play games a lot

chose from what you use your pc for
I would chose windows for gaming only, or ubuntu or another linux for surfing/office work/music/video/youtube/facebook etc. (ubuntu has newest firefox always)

if you chose linux, just game the good native linux games: quake(runs faster than on windows) , but starcraft and starcraft2 works perfectly too in wine , or halflife/cs1.5 etc.
most games work in linux too, but not all at first try.. you have to try it to know (or check appdb @ winehq.com)

ubuntu comes with solitare and minesweeper for all your gaming needs by default ;-)

$0  vs $200-300 , I would chose ubuntu , seems like a nobrainer to me, ubuntu is just as good/userfriendly for newbies
you can't crack win7 easily I think, but maybe I am wrong about that
microsoft don't let you fetch updates then... just like they don't for xp if you crack that

I prefer ubuntu but am using win 7 now only because there were a few windows programs I couldn't get to run in wine or playonlinux.

win 7 is very easy to crack. almost all win 7 torrent come with a crack. they boot ur pc in a small home brew os system to get into windows and crack it. you can also get the craks without the whole os. just dont get pissy when the crack shows as a virus. lots of good cracks do that. (got to change some files you know.)

and yes a properly cracked win 7 will let u get updates. hell i get tired of them.

im running a craked win 7 right now... :smug: amount paid? $0.00

i have heard lots of good things about linux other then some compatibility issues witch seem to be less and less i just havent messed with it.

hell if u do a little research u can boot a linux os from a flash drive (get to have win 7 and linux on pc without choosing one or the other every start up. and can boot a friends pc in linux at any time.)

Windows 7.

I started to dual boot windows XP and various linux distributions and it just drove me nuts after a while. I will say I do like to game a lot on the PC so that was a big problem. After windows 7 came out I said "fuck you linux".

Windows 7 is nice and stable.

Linux has it's place. It can be a beutiful OS but... once MS made a proper OS I didn't look back.

Windows machines if you want to game, and the like. But honestly, Linux trumps everything, however it takes some getting used to.

from what i understand the latest linux are much more user friendly but the more u know pcs/basic coding and general file diving (just made theat term up) linux will benefit you exponentially

i would honestly only choose windows over linux if there were computer programs that specifically required windows to run properly, and i needed to be able to run these programs

linux can take a little bit of troubleshooting--especially when it comes to the occasional compatability issue--but is by far a much better OS, as detailed in mio's post.

opensource freeware is the future (and present) of computer technology

Are you computer savy with windows?
Because Linux is a totally different beast; I suggest you learn the CLI, and the command line commands as that's when Linux truly shines. X Server is for scrubs.

some food for thought:

of the worlds 10 fastest supercomputers, 100% run forms of linux
of the worlds 500 fastest supercomputers, 96% run forms of linux (with unix as the runner up at 3%)

if you consider adroid smartphones, linux is the worlds most common OS, holding something like 40% of the market share

the US military runs a version of linux as their go to OS

there is even talk that steam is planning to move into linux as a gaming platform (due to windows store/xbox live cutting into their traditional market, most likely)--so one of linux's largest pitfalls, the gaming experience, may be due to change soon-- http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/09/gabe-newell-linux-is-the-future-of-gaming-new-hardware-coming-soon/

Sounds great if I want to run a hand held super computer military grade device. :zoidberg:

Linux is great, but remember, just like windows you have to be proactive.
The only reason windows gets hacked more is because it has a huge chunk of the market.
Installing ubuntu and thinking you are impervious is a false sense of security.

Now when are those Chinese phones going to hit the market?

Windows is more stable than Linux but its also tapping your keyboard and sending everything you ever typed to the NSA, GCHQ and the like.

Plus learning Linux is interesting. I'm doing the basics right now at debian.org

I found out one advantage of Linux over Windows. In Linux everything starts with / and everything else is a subdirectory. In windows you've got A:\, C:\, D:\, E:\ etc
