birthed cake but not completely colonized PICS

hi guys,
was birthing some jars today, and what was my surprise when I open this particular jar and there was NO VERM LAYER! correct, I forgot to cover it up with the verm layer barrier 5 weeks ago when I was preparing the cakes
no contams, which is crazy with no protection the entire time, BUT there was some uncolonized substrate on the top see below

I dunked it like that, but now I'm not sure if that was the correct course of action, the uncolonized substrate probably dried up in contact with direct air so mycelium couldnt colonized it,but now is wet and contams could take a hold when I put the cake in the FC
so what should I do, leave it like that, or scrap the uncolonized substrate before exposing it to fruiting conditions tomorrow?
any help would be great!

I don't know the answer but at least this will bump you back up the thread list. If it were mine I probably would cut that out with a blade but don't take my word for it

would you flame sterilize the blade and do it in a SAB? or open air wipe with alcohol and hack will do?
anybody else with brf cakes experience can chime in in this one?

How do you not realize you don't have a verm layer? You don't need to cut anything off.

I prepared 13 jars, 1 of them I forgot somehow to add the verm layer it's my first grow. I've always read that exposed non colonized SUBSTRATE is a big no no, because is nutrient rich(unlike vermiculite) and contams may get a food hold on the cake if I leave it like that

Just cut off the uncolonized section with an alchohol wiped blade. no big deal. impressive that you didnt get contams. where did you colonize the jars?

I don't think the blade would have to be flamed sterilized to cut out the bad part considering you'll be cutting down to good myc which is contam resistant anyway
