Never stop doing math
#18881746 - 09/23/13 06:48 PM (10 years, 4 months ago) |
|
|
I took a bit of a hiatus and decided to go back a couple math classes when I return to university and just do Honors Calc II to give myself a break/review semester but still learn some more (I took common Calc II last time, like 4 years ago).
And man, working through my Calc 1 text again... Even my algebra has atrophied. I got a freakin A+ in this class, but now even like "completing the square"... like, WTF is that again?
DONT DO THIS TO YOURSELVES, plus math helps so much with general thinking. Hell, Calculus 1 even had some concepts that were useful to me in the Philosophy side of my degrees (Doing computer science and philo, with a classical philo emphasis).
MATH THE FUCK UP PPL
Don't do this to yourselves
Straum's has awesome problem books that give solutions and even walkthroughs for the problems.
I'm going to start doing at least a few math problems every day, even when I don't need to and am "done with math" (like we ever are).
Math on, Shroomery. Math on!

I went back to school and I told my department head I didn't remember how to do calculus and he said I don't need to know it. This proves math is a farce and no one needs it.

Math can go and suck a fat one
I never got along with my teacher so I always ended up getting thrown out of class and that was my destiny throughout my time from 7th to 9th grade, after that I dropped out of school and never had any math lessons since.
I'm fine with numbers though, I can count stuff quickly in my head(mental calc.), nothing too fancy tho, just basic +-*/ and some percentages/fractions. Also, I remember almost every phone number that I have in my cellphone, my bank account unmbers, my closest friends bank account numbers, by heart.
Anything more advanced than that is bollocks
My studies require that I learn some trigonometry soon-ish but I'm not too worried about it..

Dammit! It's the fundamental THEOREM, not theory. The author of that comic clearly was drawing a bear. +1 for nonfiction!
And that said... good find, thanks for sharing
Meth, though... I used to go to the "math lab" to have grad students check my homework. I later found out that for weeks, my friends in the dorm had thought I was saying "I'm going to the meth lab"

good words. i've actually kinda enjoyed math over the years, and ive actually picked up a few old maths book to read or solve problems and stuff, way after hs. one thing ive always hated though was solving a shit load of similar problems, and not at my own discretion. if education wasn't forced down our throats i think a lot more people would be willing to learn. everyone is different, some people love school, love learning, and do a damn good job it, be we should also respect the decisions of those who do not want to wake up in the morning to learn some shit they have ABSOLUTELY no interested in for 8 to 9 hours a day.
this is my advice to you kids, follow your heart!.

We already had some trig few weeks ago and it didn't seem too hard.. yet
It's not really an issue I think.. I consider myself to be somewhat smart, and I really feel things would be different, if:
A: I had a better attitude when I was 15
Or
B: I had a different teacher
I'm gonna go with A here

I was afraid I was going to get a B and drag my GPA down so I decided to flunk it on purpose so I can replace the grade. The class was full this semester though. Not my best move

Many people that need calc for their major will never use it after graduation. Of course some will, but many will not. It is still an important class, because you never know if you really are going to need it again, and it is just a great overall training/exercise. I work as a chemist, and I have never used calc outside of a classroom. The only math I really do daily on paper is simple dilution math. Everything else man....thats the machine's job.

You're too right about forgetting how to math OP. I used to know math quite well. That part of my brain entirely and completely dead. Like gone, as though it never existed.
Then again I don't really care.

If you become an engineer, (or another profession that uses math daily as a core skill) all the math and math concepts you need to know will be engrained like second-nature grade school math after a couple of years on the job. don't worry about it.

If you want math to be easy, you gotta potentiate those synapses on a consistent basis.
How can I? You ask. Simple...
How do you get better at playing video games, working out, relationships? You PRACTICE!
Download the game,"math workout" and "trig quizzer" for android phones. Commit to playing it at least ONCE a day.
I promise you that math will get easier and faster to solve!
I started off finishing 20 math questions on hard in 2:20. Now I can pull it off in 31 seconds(new record).
Start off on easy though, so your mind gets the hand of simple math, then progress to more complex functions.
I got to FEEL the mental shortcuts my mind uses after doing the same problem like 100s of times.
18 + 26 ? Add the ones, then add to tens... 14 + 30 = 44. The faster you wanna get, the more your brain seeks shortcut!!
NEVER GIVE UP IN MATH! That is called failure. I KNOW I am going to struggle when I get to multivariable calculus...I compare that to running a triathlon. I gotta TRAIN if I wanna ace that mofo.
Best of luck and practice math every day!

The last time I worked with an engineer, I found myself unable to cheat off of him (them, actually) because I kept finding mistakes in their work.
One, who graduated with a Civil Engineering degree after Calc I-III, Diff EQ, Statics, etc. was hired with a prestigious engineering firm.
They paid him to sit on a train and stare at the tracks looking for cracks indicating that a new rail was needed there.
12 hours a day, living in hotels, all over the midwest... staring at train tracks.
Luckily he's got a much better gig now but those of us in proper sciences LOVE to make fun of engineers

DUDE THIS IS FUCKING GREAT. Gots to find me an iOS version
Till then, I'm using the same Calculus books I used as a teenager and (GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE), after a couple days of staring on horror at equations such as x^2 + x + 1 and wonder what the fuck "complete the square" means...
It all comes back, and fast.
Have heart, fellow math enthusiasts and reluctant participants.
That said, you can't possibly ever be to ready for higher math.

uh is that story real? I'm not an engineer and i'm pretty dumb but i thought of 1 or 2 ways to replace that job with a 50 dollar robot in about 3 seconds.

Find the resistance between 2 arbitrary nodes in an infinite 4 dimensional resistor grid of 500 ohm resistors

if you love math
and if you solve it, there will be another question, just with complex ohm resistors I'm sure they exist, just for the math fun

All I remember for ohms is that it is the voltage divided by the current? (Ohm's law) lol
I cants wait til I finish calc 1 and start general physics. Imma become so knowledgeable not until next year though lol

"proper" science makes you sound extremely snobby man.

Proper was probably a poor word to use. Natural science wouldn't have covered what I meant though. How's traditional science?
And it's not offensive to engineers. When I posted a rather funny text conversation an Anthropologist/Mathemetician and myself had on facebook making fun of engineers, they pretty much all agreed lol.

You've bested me for one. One thing I will give engineers is they (if they continue their studies instead of looking at train tracks--that's a true story BTW but not one that could be solved in $50 exactly) do get very good at computation in some VERY specialized areas.
Make good inventors too.
