Australians drugged (kratom), raped and robbed at Thai beach parties
    #18881611 - 09/23/13 06:08 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Young Australians partying on beaches in southern Thailand are drinking a potentially deadly drug cocktail made from a local leaf trafficked by criminals who prey on them when they are under its influence, Australia's official representative in the area warns.

The drug, kratom, is often mixed with the insect repellent DEET as well as cough medicine, cola and ice, leaving users in a stupefied and vulnerable state, says Larry Cunningham, Australia's honorary consul based in Phuket.

The victims of rapes, assaults and thefts committed at Thailand's beach rave parties usually failed to report the crimes to police, he said, leaving the extent of the problem largely unknown.

“What do you do if you are out of it from taking this stuff and you are dragged away in the night and raped by a pack of Thai guys?"

Kratom is a tree in the coffee family that grows in abundance in the jungles of south-east Asia. Its opiate-like effect and low cost has led to rampant trafficking in tourist areas. Twenty leaves is enough to create a kratom cocktail for several people and costs the equivalent of $3.

The drug has been banned in Thailand since 1943 but Justice Minister Chaikasem Nitisiri has proposed legalising it, saying its use may detract from people using drugs like methamphetamine and crystal-meth.

“Kratom was used as a traditional medicine in the past,” he told Thai journalists last week.

In an interview on the eve of his retirement after eight years in the job, Mr Cunningham said Australian parents would be shocked to know how Thai criminals target young Australians and other foreigners at parties like those on Koh Phangan, an island where each full moon up to 30,000 ravers cram into one kilometre of beach, sipping cocktails from buckets.

“They are some of the worst criminals in Thailand ... rapists, murderers and thieves and some are corrupt police,” he said.

Mr Cunningham said one young distressed Australian woman turned up at the Australian embassy in Bangkok wearing only a T-shirt and bikini. She had been pack raped and had all her valuables stolen during a party and someone had put her on a bus to Bangkok.

Mr Cunningham criticised the portrayal of the parties by Fairfax Media travel writer Ben Groundwater as “glorious debauchery” and his strong advice was for people to stay away.

“These are dangerous, dangerous places … even groups of revellers are targeted by these criminals,” Mr Cunningham said.

“Previously the buckets contained mixes like cheap Thai whiskey but now drinkers have no idea what is in there,” he said.

Dozens of revellers are usually ferried to mainland hospitals after each party on Koh Phangan, suffering a litany of ailments and injuries.

Last New Year's Eve, 22 year-old British tourist Stephan Aston was shot dead as he danced with friends at a waterfront bar.

Ten foreigners have died in mysterious circumstances since 2009 at Thai holiday destinations, including Canadian sisters Noemi and Audrey Belanger, who were found dead in their hotel on the southern island of Phi Phi in 2011.

An autopsy report into the deaths has not been released but authorities say the likely cause was a deadly cocktail mix.

Mr Cunningham, 64, has led criticism of jet ski, taxi, motorbike and other scams targeting tourists on Phuket, which prompted a crackdown by an elite police unit, the Department of Special Investigation.

But Mr Cunningham said many of the more than 20,000 Australians who visited Phuket each month came to Thailand thinking they could do here what they could not do at home, including breaking laws.

“They get plastered and walk around with their shirts off and jump on motorcycles drunk,” he said.

Mr Cunningham said that about half of the average 50 deaths of Australians on Phuket each year were avoidable, including deaths from traffic accidents and falling from high-storey hotels.

He said while the Department of Foreign Affairs website carried warnings for travellers, more ways should be found to publicise risks in places like Phuket.

“We have got to get the message across that people shouldn't leave their brains behind when they come to Thailand."

Mr Cunningham said he will live forever with the “wailing” of relatives who have come to Phuket to take home the bodies of their loved ones.

“It's just heartbreaking to see."

Australian travellers should take out medical insurance and be aware of what the policy covered, he said, recounting the story of an Australian who suffered a fractured skull while riding a motorbike on Phuket.

As the hospital bills grew to $60,000, his insurance company in Australia refused to pay because he did not have a motorbike licence in Australia.

The man's father, who was about to retire, had to take out a loan to pay the hospital.

“Many travellers don't know these things ... stories like these should be on the front page,” Mr Cunningham said.

Mr Cunningham said that in retirement he planned to spend six months of the year in Sydney and six months in Phuket, where he owns the five-star Chava resort on Surin beach.

Australia has advertised for a new honorary consul for Phuket.

Have been to one of these and it is absurd how many fucktards can be attracted to one place at one time. Its not surprising some end up dead with how disrespectful and idiotic these people act, especially australian's and british men (yea i realize american's do this stupid shit in mexico/the Caribbean but we are talking about thailand right now and this is my honest experience there). You get a bunch of young 18-22yo kids who come from a country where beer is $8 a pint and here you can get a fifth of whiskey for $2 and its just bound to be trouble without even mentioning all the other random shit that is there. I don't know if they are mixing kratom in the buckets, but I do know they are 100% making mushroom shakes, passing out and putting yaba in drinks (usually sold as "ecstacy" but really mostly meth), and basically everything has redbull thrown in it (and the redbull contains ephedrine). Opium is openly sold as well as the shittiest weed you will ever see in your life for $10 an ounce (also with the chance that you will immediately be ratted out to a cop that you will have to bribe for $1k or so). I'm fairly certain the one time I smoked someone else's weed it was laced with yaba as well since I stayed up for the next 48 hours, I wouldn't be surprised with how cheap it is and how shitty the weed looks/smells that they have to put something in it to make people feel anything.

These things really are a recipe for disaster and I honestly stayed relatively sober (stuck to $0.25 beers and weak buckets where I kept my eye on the person the WHOLE time) while there because I was definitely fearful, but moreso fearful of the travelers than the locals (the locals mostly didn't fuck with people unless they were being real assholes. Though once in vang vieng, laos I saw a guy get gang beaten by paddles by a group of 4 or 5 locals because he peed on their building and was just generally being an asshole, I wasn't sure if he was killed or ok, if he died he would just be another "drowning victim" and I didn't want to stick around to find out).

This is not the place to fuck around with drugs either as most of you have seen the news articles and are aware of the harsh penalties. Most people are so fucking dumb and just think its a third world shithole so they can do whatever the hell they want with no consequences. Not to mention they are fucking up a once pristine environment with all the waste these things create. And to top it off they are giving people from these countries the impression that people from the western world are just as bad as they see on t.v., completely focused on getting as fucked up as possible with no respect for human dignity or anything else.

I'm all about having a good time and have been super fucked up/done really stupid ass things, but not putting my life on the line to do it which is exactly what happens when you go to one of these things and drink a mystery concoction made by either some idiotic drunk backpacker working under the table or a bitter local who is happy for the money but pissed as how people are literally shitting on his island/culture.

Also, for the poster above, phuket is pronounced 'Poo-khet' not 'fuck it' lol

My friend lived in Thailand for several months and she seemed to think it was a lot of fun, she said you just can't be a fucking retard.  She also went to Laos for the lazy river thingy that had a ton of bars with all sorts of drugs sold in the open before it got shut down.  Sounds like it would be a fun place to visit.

DEET? Another racist scopolamine type of urban legend? DEET has no effects other than insecticide. I call BS, some dead tourists had bug spray levels in autopsies and journalists misread translated document. People don't drink DEET.

Find the people responsible for drugging and raping these girls/guys (Probably happens to guys too) and then send a message by video taping and distributing the removal of their testicals and penises before quartering their bodies.

The only way rapists will learn to respect other people. I'd do it to a rapist.

I had no idea you could drug someone with Kratom to the point of raping them.

I have shared kratom with plenty of people. Some like it others dont, but never have I seen someone "out of it" on a dose of Kratom.

Its probably BS, if you wanted to drug someone why would you use a shitty drug like kratom when benzos are easy to get and cheap as shit in Thailand.  Also there is enough passed out tourists anyway from alcohol and DEET...

Shitty drug for drugging people, I never tried it so I can't comment on how good of a drug it is for recreational use.

I've ingested 2 large doses, somewhat from 8 to 12 grams each time. I barely felt a thing, you sure as shit couldn't drug and rape a person off of it. All it did was make me slightly relaxed and alert.
