Kratom: Designer Drug or Miracle Herb?

Is it a miracle plant with all kinds of medicinal benefits? Or is it the next legal designer drug like bath salts? The answer depends on who you ask. "It is a great pain reducer" exclaimed licensed private investigator Neil Switkowski. "It is dangerous" countered Austin Recovery counselor Angela Vickrey in a separate interview. These comments are indicative of the two very different worlds when it comes to kratom. "I have actually used this to quit smoking" Switkowski continued. Vickrey went on to explain how users she sees are "physically addicted."
Kratom comes from a tree in Southeast Asia. Its leaves are dried, and consumed in a tea, a pill, or a liquid. It's completely legal in every state except Indiana. It's what happens after taking it that's created such a debate. Switkowski and his wife make liquid kratom at their Pflugerville home. "This product is very good for menstrual cramps, headaches, hangovers" he explained. Angela Vickrey at Austin recovery is just as confident that it's dangerous. She told KEYE-TV "what we're seeing are withdrawal symptoms similar to opiates or heroin." Switkowski claims kratom is not addictive and says those seeking help for kratom addiction are often taking other drugs. We took that notion to Austin Recovery. "Usually it's part of a menu of drugs that they're taking. It's not usually their drug of choice" Vickrey answered. She continued saying "usually they're on meth or cocaine."
In interviewing both we found the amount used could also be a reason for the difference of opinion. "It's very rare we have a client addicted to kratom but when we do see one it's someone who's a chronic user who's been using large amounts over a long period of time" Vickrey explained. That's significantly different from how Switkowski and his customers use it.
"I can drink a half a shot of this and my headache is gone in less than 10 minutes" he told us. His wife Courtney Archbold says she uses half an ounce to deal with menstrual symptoms. Vickrey though isn't sold telling anyone thinking about using it "absolutely do not try it." The DEA says in low doses kratom produces stimulant effects similar to coffee. In high doses the agency says it has effects similar to that of opiates. It denies any medicinal benefits.
