pink oyster bags
    #18825486 - 09/10/13 09:34 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

this is my first attempt at doing bag tek & also using newspaper as the substrate. i started these on 9-5 i have 1 bag with 4lbs of paper and 2 pints of pf tek spawn, the other a 2 lbs of paper & 1 pint of spawn. im having trouble with the 4 lb bag here are some photos.

the bigger bag doesnt have the filter patch, this maybe the cause? i made sure before zip tying that i left some air in the bag. ive heard that to much sub can be bad for colonization, i assume this could be a factor.

the 2 lb bag seems to be colonizing fairly fast and good. i read that for oyster bags you should cut x's after inoculation. i just cut x's on the 4 lb bag today (9-10-13) in hope to help colonization as it close to none atm.

should i bother cutting x's in the 2 lb bag? or since its doing good wait till after colonization? thanks

also, i forgot to add that i pasteurized in my PC @ about 160-170. i sort of fucked up because before i added the paper it was a consistent 170 after adding the paper i checked the top of the water and noticed that the temp fell but i failed to realize the temps under the paper where good so i had the stove top on high to where the water was bubbling for a bit :frown: so surely this couldve done me in

I don't think there's many beneficial organisms that live in newspaper naturally so pasteurization probably won't give an advantage over sterilization.

:whathesaid:

And, how wet was your newspaper when you spawned?  I mean did you physically squeeze every possible drop out of it?  Paper holds a lot of water and can hinder colonization if it's too wet.

was a pain in the ass but I squeezed it pretty good to field capacity (seriously the worst part of the tek) looks like the 4 lb bag the spawn is a bit dry :frown: maybe I can mist? or caulk it up as a fail.

the 4 lb bag really doesn't have a whole lot of condensation like the 2 lb bag so maybe it is the dryness.

Wrapped paper. Man, I was thinking of nailing this down with procedure pics but you beat me to it.
Most folks do unwrapped but oysters actually dislike exposure/dryness.

hmm, I thought this was the norm. how does the paper colonize otherwise? and yes, my bags have a lot of condensation so the sub is very moist, even my 4 lb bag after I cut some x's in it has gotten up to speed. Im wondering after colonization is complete should I leave the sub in the bag and just let mushies push through bag?

Yes.  Don't strip the bag.  Like Oeric said, oysters really don't like their substrate getting dried out, they'll do much better letting them push fruits through the x's.

*UPDATE*

the 4lb bag took off after some x's & it started fruiting not sure if it fully colonized but here it is.

they seem to have a brownish color on top of the caps, not sure if this is normal coming from a paper substrate. otherwise, they look like they will be a good harvest

also, the 2lb-er hasnt starting fruiting. not entirely sure why :/ hope it will start soon

I have a question about pink oyster smell.

I ordered a bag from an ebay vendor, weighed about 4kg, and it came with about 200g of pins on top (grown in the bag and crushed from transport)

Removed much of them, that's how i know it was 200g. The bag really really stinks like old urine (ammonia). Is this what pink oysters smell like, or is it because of whatever substrate was used?

dug around through the pins, and found mold was only a little blotch, so I am thinking to isolate a clean piece and clone.

Question is, if I grow them on grain/sawdust, will it stink like pee? Basically, is the mushroom itself giving off the offensive smell, or is it the bag/substrate/bacterial contam? Vendor offered to replace the bag, but with a smell like that, I am not interested, as I grow them in boxes (with plastic sheet inside, 80% RH and light from one side) in my living room. I don't want to grow urine/ammonia smells.

Bacteria is what I would bet. That is not surprising thinking about the moisture content
of that newspaper.

Yeah, bacteria.
If anything, overripe pinks smell like foul fish.
Fresh they have a unique scent that's niether pleasant or unpleasant I guess. Just unique

Thank you for the info!

Will isolate and clone it then, away from that infested pile of crap

Edit: took off the pins, as they were not moving, and cut off any popcorning off the top of the block. Left it on the window sil to dry up for a few hours. Smell is eliminated. cleaned up the wetter parts that looked off, and it looks like it's pinning again. will post pics if it survives. Put it in a FC now.

My FCs are cardboard boxes with a plastic lining with a half open side and a clear plastic sheet top. Holes every here and there. Verm on the bottom. Heavy misting mornings, evening, and before going to bed keep the RH at 70-80 with lots of FAE

Yea pinks STINK, I pick and sell out the same day, 24hrs later they are not so good, 48hrs later they are horrible! So anything that does not leave the same day hits the drier.
