HELP!!!!! Are these liberty caps?
    #18879987 - 09/23/13 10:28 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I picked these today in Hampshire, south ENGLAND.

In a field with cows grazing and grass.

They have dark gills and no ring on the stems, but they don't have the typical conical shape of a liberty cap.

It was a dry, sunny day and is late(ish) September.

Didn't take any prints.

Can anyone offer a hand? I want to gobble them
x

you have a mix of.

Protostropharia semiglobata
Panaeolus sp. looks like antallarium.
Panaeolina foenisecii

No libs. Looks like you are checking the right area though, colder temps should follow soon, which really brings out this species. Often i find great territory out of season, but upon looking at it every week through the season, i find some of the most special fungi. like the G. viridans obs. So keep looking there and elsewhere, the more you hunt the better your luck.

OH NOOOOOOOOO! What a waste of time, I spent all afternoon getting these things.

I had found them before in that place so hoped I'd catch them early - it's interesting what you say about them coming out just after cold weather!

I've only been looking for liberty caps - you seem like a pro, it's amazing what a list of mushrooms there are out there. I wouldn't trust myself to go near anything other than liberty caps because (as far as I know) even if I ate all this lot I'd still be ok?

I need to come down after the first frost then and keep looking. I've never found an extremely plentiful place, this spot of mine is normally ok but still takes a long time. How important are cows in the process?

Thanks a lot for the help, genius mushroom man!

Don't be discouraged. Now you know what not to pick. Look for more of a nipple on the cap.
