The matsi's smell very cucumbery to me, with an overpowering top-note of smelly feet and cinnamon. But really it's just too hard to describe accurately. It's like more than just a scent, it's a straight up sinus reaction every time I put my nose on it. I'm still waiting on a smell-o-vision app to come out.

And Bear's Head Tooth

Quit piddling around down on the coast and head up to the mountains!
What elevation did you find those at? You found the Hericium on pine?

The Bear's Head Tooth growing on Pine? No. Well, I don't really remember. It was probably a fir or hemlock I bet. Elevation above 2000 ft.

Good to see another Oregonian in here!
You can dry them, sauté and freeze them, pickle them. Chantys are very resilient. As for what the BEST method is, that's up to you.
One thing I haven't tried yet is just putting them into the freezer without doing anything to them. I think I read somewhere that they can get bitter but I don't know for sure.

Saute and freeze is my favorite, they keep their flavor and texture very well that way.

Awesome update Brad! Those porcini buttons look perfect! What a great haul.
And ive been waiting to find my first A. muscaria of the season with no luck.
That chant patch is epic and i know what you mean, ive been leaving the chants behind too lately. I dont sell them so if i picked them all they would just go bad
Its looking great out there. That post is inspiring ill probably go out and hunt all day tommorow.

Thanks, it was a lot of fun.
That was just one of the chant patches too. I found several more of them.
Mind you this was at about 4000 ft.
Get out there and go!
I thought it was crazy how just about everywhere I found B.edulis, A. Muscaria was always close by if not in the middle of them. Both are mycorrhizal, you think they would compete.

The gills separate in a layer like a bolete. Rules out Chroogomphous.
I dunno, I have them in front of me and a few printing.
Nothing is matching up yet.

I just read up on Chroogomphous and read that the gills do not separate in a layer. Kind of like when you separate the tube layer from the cap of a bolete. I didn't know what they meant until I tried it and sure enough the gills peeled off in a layer much like a bolete.
I think I'm just tired lol

Also found a nice Cauliflower mushroom that is going to be made into beef stroganoff tomorrow! There were so many chanterelles, it was awesome. Good times for sure.

Definitely mushroom season, already crashed my bike staring at boletes on the side of the road.
headed up to hood on Saturday to hunt to my little heart's content. Can't think of a better way to spend the first day of my thirties
