I've got about two thirds of a round bale (hay ) in my steers pen. I thought this large grouping looked pretty neat, measures about 3 feet across. I'm new to the hobby and am sure they are very common as they are everywhere on my property. They don't bruise blue and the spores look to be rust colored. I'm smart enough not to mess w/anything I'm unfamiliar with but am curious as to their name. Any ideas? I guess I should also tell you that I'm in Fla.

I would say they were Lepoita, but all Lepoita have white spore prints.
I'm going to go with some type of Agaricus because of print color. Do they bruise yellow or red? Do they have a particular smell?

Hmm, looks like some species of lepiota to me, but indeed the spore color doesn't match. Could you do a spore print (on blue or green paper preferably)?

I agree that those are very Lepiota-like. Since you say the spores "look to be rust colored", is that because that's what color the gills are? Make sure you actually make a spore print - often (especially with pale spored mushrooms) the gills are a different color than the spores are. For verification of spore color, the spore print must be on white paper. The use of colored paper is to help verify that spores have actually fallen for white spore mushrooms.
Happy mushrooming!

No they're not. Don't give out advice if you don't know what you're talking about.

hallucinogenic OR poisonous- yeah sounds like they knew what the fuck they were talking about... Don't tell me you're running around with some outdated fieldguide looking at mushrooms that you sound like you can't ID. That's dangerous man.

I own the same guide and on page 596 it reads: "A few species that grow on dung are either hallucinogenic or possibly poisonous." However, there are no coprinaceae that are listed as active in this book. This is not a very reliable guide in my opinion, and it bases activity of certain species on comments of persons other than the author.

Oh, and my guess is Lepiota cristata.

Ah ha. They grop Coprinus with Panaeolus. That's the problem. They were refering to the Panaeolus as being hallucinogenic (didn't do a good job at making that one clear either). The only activity associated with Coprinus is their ability to make the user sick if alcohol is consumed within a few days of eating them.
