7 out of 10 Americans still see Hussein - 9/11 link
    #1887901 - 09/06/03 07:08 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

There's an article over at the Washington Post about a recent poll they did that indicates that a large amount of Americans still believe that Hussein was behind 9/11. I've quoted a shorter version from AP because they show more details of the poll than the WaPo did.

Quote:

Poll Examines Saddam, 9-11 Link
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Nearly seven in 10 Americans believe it is likely that ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was personally involved in the Sept. 11 attacks, says a poll out almost two years after the terrorists' strike against this country.

Sixty-nine percent in a Washington Post poll published Saturday said they believe it is likely the Iraqi leader was personally involved in the attacks carried out by al-Qaida. A majority of Democrats, Republicans and independents believe it's likely Saddam was involved.

The belief in the connection persists even though there has been no proof of a link between the two.

President Bush and members of his administration suggested a link between the two in the months before the war in Iraq. Claims of possible links have never been proven, however.

Veteran pollsters say the persistent belief of a link between the attacks and Saddam could help explain why public support for the decision to go to war in Iraq has been so resilient despite problems establishing a peaceful country.

The president frequently has called the Iraq war an important centerpiece in the United States' war on terror. But some members of the administration have said recently they don't believe there is a direct link.

The Post poll of 1,003 adults was taken Aug. 7-11 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

A Time magazine/CNN poll released Saturday said most Americans - 71 percent - believe the United States has done a good job in Iraq since the end of major fighting, while 26 percent said it has done a poor job.

Sixty-three percent said the nation was right in going to war in Iraq and 32 percent said it was wrong. But the Time/CNN poll found Americans more closely split on whether the military action was worth the price in America lives, taxpayer dollars and other costs - 49 percent said yes, 43 percent no and 8 percent were unsure.

The poll also found Bush's approval down to 52 percent, from 63 percent in May.

The Time/CNN survey of 1,003 adults was taken Sept. 3-4 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

the sad thing is that no one's really telling that lie loud or often.

people are making an assumption out of sheer ignorance.

Why do people in America believe that Hussein was linked to September 11th? Is there a reason or is it just an assumption by everyone and so they lash out and scapegoat someone (being that Bin Laden hasn't been found and the whole issue has been swept under the rug)? Did Bush say that he was linked or something? I really can't remember.

Its the same reason as why an australian television show went over there and interviewed people off the street about which country the US should invade next.
100% suggested another country - usually Iran, North Korea or France, and when the host gave them a fake map with Australia with the name of the country they wanted to bomb, 75% didnt realise and pointed to australia as the country they wanted to invade.
Ignorance!!!
The US education has a lot to answer for -
The link between saddam and bin laden is laughable - a leader of a sunni minority who oppresses, kills and tortures shi'ites dont often make friends with a terrorist shi'ite crusader.

Here are a few quotes from the original article that help illustrate how the administration's rhetoric seems to imply that connection. I personally am more inclined to think that it's plain ignorance/stereotyping (Bin Laden + Hussein = 'evil arabs').

Bush:
"If the world fails to confront the threat posed by the Iraqi regime, refusing to use force, even as a last resort, free nations would assume immense and unacceptable risks. The attacks of September the 11th, 2001, showed what the enemies of America did with four airplanes. We will not wait to see what terrorists or terrorist states could do with weapons of mass destruction."

"The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on September the 11, 2001 -- and still goes on. That terrible morning, 19 evil men -- the shock troops of a hateful ideology -- gave America and the civilized world a glimpse of their ambitions."

"The liberation of Iraq is a crucial advance in the campaign against terror. We've removed an ally of al Qaeda, and cut off a source of terrorist funding. And this much is certain: No terrorist network will gain weapons of mass destruction from the Iraqi regime, because the regime is no more. In these 19 months that changed the world, our actions have been focused and deliberate and proportionate to the offense. We have not forgotten the victims of September the 11th -- the last phone calls, the cold murder of children, the searches in the rubble. With those attacks, the terrorists and their supporters declared war on the United States. And war is what they got."

that 7 out of 10 number is pretty funny.

I think that's the same number of americans
that watch nascar.

in all seriousness, in that last set of quotes...

makes me wonder how the man can sleep
with himself at night. he must really think that
a 'forgive me' and a prayer will make things
better between the murderer and his god.

I'm reminded of asomething that Richard Burton wrote after he played Churchill in a TV series:

"In the course of preparing myself, I realized fresh that I hate Churchill and all of his kind. They have stalked down the corridors of endless power all through history. What man of sanity would say on hearing of the atrocities committed by the Japanese: 'We shall wipe them out, everyone of them, men, women and children. There shall not be a Japanese left on the face of the earth.' Such simple-minded cravings for revenge leave me with a horrified but reluctant awe for such ferocity."

"Bring 'em on!" Indeed.

seriously.

the only difference between the two cases, though, is
that churchill was, arguably, his own man.

bush is just a figurehead for a larger organization of
churchills.

Several months I ago I saw a list of statistics of several industrial nations regarding the same subject - whether or not Hussein had any links to 9-11. They were all pretty much 90%+ "hell no."

Compare that to the American statistics, and well, you'll see the spectacular achievements of propaganda and meme warfare. Is this all the result of propaganda? Probably not; there is some mass ignorance thrown into the mix as well.

What about the supposed secret Al Queda-Hussein connection that the Bush administration made such a big deal about before the war but yet failed to prove? Seems a bit suspect, doesnt it?

it's fucking scary that alot of Americans think like that. Goes to show that technological advancement doesn't necessarily mean a higher level of intelligence. In fact, most people seem to be willfully ignorant, in the UK too. It's alot easier to see everything in black and white and believe what the government and mainstream media tells you. There's alot less stress involved.

alot of people just live in their own stupid little world. they've taken the time to program different rings into their cellphone for each of their friends. they watch some garbage reality TV show. their music scene is 'disposable pop crap'. they don't know who our vice president is.

it's pretty sad how ignorant most people are and how small the world is that they live in.

Its to the point now where I am beginning to question who I'm more pissed off at:

the government, for trying to sell these lies,
or the people, for believing them.

when we were at war with afghanistan, everyone believed 9-11 was AlQueda

Now that we are at war with Iraq, everyone believes 9-11 was Saddam Hussien's handiwork.

obviously, you cant have it both ways, but historical contradictions seem to have no effect on public opinion.

WE ARE AT WAR WITH IRAQ. WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH IRAQ
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
