Large, white, shaggy, prolific mushrooms on dead wood
    #18878787 - 09/23/13 12:33 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

For some reason I was inclined to call these a pholiota species, but couldn't remember why. I suppose it's because I haven't logged into the shroomery for over a year

So! I'm rusty, please forgive any shortcomings in this post.

Habitat: dead wood. Unfortunately I can't tell what kind; a fallen log, which appears to have spikes, and has been stripped of bark either by erosion or collection by humans.

Gills: Irregularly coloured. I think they are off-white/grey with brown stains. They appear to attract flies, especially MOSQUITOES and smell of chocolatey almond.

Cap: very shaggy on the outside, white, dense. Mature caps are approximately 4 inches across. Slightly cottony shag, so it's not slimy. Uniformly circular, without waves.

Stem: very tough, with a sharp, shard-like base rooted in the wood. Long, phallic (lol) and slightly flared at the base. Approximately one-inch across in mature specimens. White on the outside, and brown at the base where cut. I didn't cut further up so unsure what the texture was all the way through.

Spore print: I'm sorry! I collected about 10 different edibles this day and didn't want to risk any weird cross-contamination so didn't collect any for spore printing. If it helps, there was some chocolatey-brown residue left on the fallen veils, and the brown staining in the gills suggest that spores may be brown.

Bruising: none, noted.

I've got better pictures but my camera is buried under camping gear. Let me know if you need them, but I think it's a pretty distinctive shroom..?

There is no danger for "cross-contamination" only a mix up on ID.

I would like to know what that is as well.

I have an urge to eat it.

If it turns out to be an edible species could you go back and harvest it
and culture it for distribution to me?

edit- Looks like some strange wood-loving agaricus or neolentinus.

Probably Pholiota populnea.

Arora says it is edible but does not taste too great and Miller and Miller from North American Mushrooms say it is both non-toxic and inedible.

I would still like the collection. If you happen to be able to accommodate.

:excellent:

I think this is the best ID. Thanks... and sorry I can't accommodate, Mr Burns.
