please remind me again of what the legitimate fields in modern philosophy might be...
I suppose that meme is a good example of how "academic philosophy" can be pitifully funny in an overbearingly eager sort of way...
I mean I kind of like whimsical experimental thought that gets ontological, but perhaps in a kind of novelty way (perhaps thinking of someone like spinoza here) but analytic "meaning police work" is a good thing.
but personally I have stayed away from that philosophy stuff lately, I guess I kind of find it a bit flat lately... maybe wittgenstein should've been my professor and made me be a decent human being by telling me to fuck off
but yeah, at least ignore me and just take a gander at this article, it isn't long and kind of gets to some decent points related to this thread:
"which philosophy is dead" hawkings talks shit..... (yes this is from aljazeera)
but yeah, react and stuff my bros

Funny because Hawkins strikes me as the kind of guy who likes to wax philosophical about possibility, like how aliens might treat humans if they find us.
If science can't find an answer the assumption is simply that the answer hasn't been found. It takes philosophy to consider the possibility that there is no answer. I'm not sure what modern discovers Hawkins is referring to so I can't comment on it specifically, but science has answered questions that were once only touchable with philosophy, such as what is the Sun made of.
But still, knowing what the Sun is made of from a scientific point of view is an incomplete answer. Atoms and atomic reactions, energetic release of light heat and other assorted radiations... what's all that about?

the article isn't really about him, they probably just used his fairly recent quote from "google zeitgeist" as a way to pull in readers then expand from there with the idea about philosophy dying (or at least some "continental" guys try to give credence for the analytic's slow death or something

lol
ya i feel ya... i did a philosophy degree which i took quite seriously but have since stayed away from..
not that i didnt enjoy it or found it entirely useless.. but on the whole have found it difficult to find relevance for or integrate into my regular life..
i guess 'philosophy' is like a museum of great fossilized ideas, intricate, impressive, easy to get lost in... but pretty much dead bone.. unless you are going for a job as an excavator, or tour guide, or doorman.. it is pretty useless
but i do think it is a good resource or stimulus for thought and imo the most relevant kinds of philosophy are the social/historical kinds when it is used as a point of critique, or imagined alternative or reinterpretation of how things are (e.g. someone like zizek)...

Philosophy: The critical analysis of fundamental assumptions or beliefs.
The idea that philosophy has not kept up with science is fallacious, scientific articles are used to demonstrate points left and right in these forums let alone in the world at large. What a crack pot idea

Well, ontological theorizing is as alive as it's ever been. Also, I would say that ethics, especially as they relate to technology, privacy, etc. are just as significant, if not moreso, than ever.
