I got this at the store for $1.99 Is that expensive? I think it's a Portobello mushroom I don't remember what it was for sure.
It's about the size of a CD

Seems about the right price, and looks like a portabella to me. Marinate, marinate!

My favorite way to cook these is to put a teaspoon of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce in a zip lock and toss in the whole cap. Make sure it coats the gills and let it sit an hour or two in the fridge. Then fire up the grill and put it on so the gills face up and grill it til it shrinks about 15 percent, or until it looks like the sides are curling up (or until you think its finished). When I pull it off the grill I hit it with the pepper mill and throw some nice fat chunks of pepper on it then slice it up and eat it like a damned steak.
So delicious

If you want a challenge, and love Agaricus, go for it. (I love them too) There should be live tissue. Dig in to find the clean stuff. But they are so cheap and plentiful at the grocery store, most of us grow the wood-loving mushrooms which are more expensive and harder to find.
Best of both worlds, you can clone and eat; Break off the stipe and cut a chunk to agar. Cook the cap.

Oh no. Just eat it. It will be a pile of goo by then. To do agar work you want it as fresh as possible. Also, commercial producers usually multiply their spawn out many times and that leads to old genes that don't fruit well after cloning.
Maybe buy a culture from one of the sponsors? Or at least buy another mushroom when you have all your supplies Do you have a pressure cooker? Glove box? Malt extract? Grain? composted manure?

The one time I tried to clone a grocery store mushroom (king oyster), all I got was blobs. Tasty blobs, and I had fun watching it grow, but still blobs.
I recommend starting with oysters (specifically a culture from the sponsors). Oysters are aggressive and easy to grow but don't ship too well, so for fairly little work you get much higher quality than you can buy. I get the impression that with growing your own Portobellos there's more work for less improvement in quality.
