Where ever; and when ever you open that Jar... change out of ALL YOUR CLOTHES and run STR8 to a shower with a trashbag over your hair!!! before entering whatever room your incubating in... Remember that; you don't want to have to KILL contamination (with sprays or pressure cooking) the idea is to AVOID contamination ALTOGETHER...this means treating EVERY MOLD as if it was a DEADLY VIRUS... I mean, get out the fuckin Hazmat suit... pretend you were running a drill for Al Quida...DO NOT LET those spores "ESCAPE" and if/when you do?... SHOWER IMMEDIATELY... And actually? truth be known? If a jar goes bad; even if it has alot of myc growth and all that... CHUCK IT and FORGET ABOUT IT... The Jar is not worth the contams that will infect you're WHOLE SET if you open it) EVEN OUTSIDE! its not worth it!!! b/c you will bring that shit RIGHT BACK IN... EVEN IF YOU ARE CAREFUL! so? best bet? just remember my phrase..."YOu can't grow shrooms without breaking some jars" so? learn to just let em go... (I know its hard) (b/c they're your babies) ...and aborting a baby is hard... BUT WHEN IT MUST BE DONE; THEN IT MUST BE DONE!!! JEEEZ! can you imagine how women feel?!?!?!?
You know I hope Im getting this msg to you in time? b/c ME? I was the dumbass that opened all his contamed jars...i didn't know about endo-spores and how impossible they were to get rid of once they were there...etc. etc.. so?
Spend time in the contam forum READING>..not just posting pics of all the shit you fuck up. (like I did)..haha... Yeah; I've never had any luck with LC...to me? its too RISKY.. exPESSIALLY when your still a

So a quick update I went ahead and spawned 3 of my jars to coir I may have done one thing wrong... I added the casing right after I hope that's not a problem I just used 100% coco coir I hope that turns out I have 2 jars that are at 100% colonized and waiting for the consolidation period to get done and ill go a head and dunk and roll them I think its another 4 or 5 days and my casing has about one week. Sigh one day at a time. 6 jars are were inoculated on 8/31 and have nice myc growth showing :-) and I'm going to start another 5 jars in a few days after the birth of my 2 cakes.

if you cased with coir and its also your substrate then it will likely just colonize. you shouldnt need a casing if you're growing cubes. i dont think you need to worry.

Coir is not casing layer material, it is bulk substrate material...it will colonize and be just fine.

RogerRabbit said: You guys seriously need to stop referring to your substrate trays as 'casings'. That is an incorrect term unless all you have is a casing layer and no manure, grains, or anything. Nobody grows mushrooms on 'casings', period.
The casing layer is only the top layer on a colonized bulk substrate, nothing else. 'Casing' sure as hell isn't a name for a mushroom growing project. RR

okay so basically im using it all as a bulk substrate? and if so should let it colonize 100% and case it with verm? or should I let it colonize to about 40-50% on top and fruit it with areas uncolonized on top? (I would think if I had uncolonized areas I would be opening it up to contamination?)
I didn't know coir was a substrate (even though it says on the package) I thought it was a casing layer... the more you know thx guys for your help I know you take time out of your days to help people like my self to get a firm grasp on the ideas and cycles we are striving to obtain.

i think the purpose, according to the package, means substrate for a vivarium (or animal terrarium). You're just coincidentally using it as your own substrate for your project, too.
your mushrooms dont need a casing layer, as already said. A casing layer is added to a fully colonized substrate and used to help control moisture on the surface of your substrate which, in theory, would be beneficial. But, as many people have noticed, its not necessarily worth the extra work. You can still produce results that far exceed your expectations without a casing layer.
use this. it'll help you have a stronger sense of the function behind each part of your project!

zintor said: I was just trying to find a good mixture to know what im looking for the words on a tek are only so good when you see what it is saying. you know what I mean? I put the incubator a way its running 75 now with out it I didn't realize it was that warm I tried a lc in a baby bottle I don't know if its turning out there is small white balls starting to develop so im hoping its turning out. I also had some failures with my jars idk if it was from bad spore print or the heating pad inviting the contam in but 6 got mean green. so took them out side dumped them. I don't own a pressure cooker so I have just been steam cooking at a mild boil to strong boil for 90-100 minutes I heard it works and it work with my first grow not that I had 100% success rate lol. I've been doing the reading 2-4 hour a day. but I think one step at a time im not trying to reinvent the wheel just understand it down to the science of it. any way thx for the links im going to check them out right now. update soon.
90 Mins for PC< you have to steam them for like 4 hours.
If I were a betting man, I would bet that unless you listen to fellow and psilly your next grow gonna be just as screwed.
We all want you to do well, so please follow the advise and in 3-5 weeks give us some groovy pictures.
