    #1887289 - 09/06/03 12:01 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

The cap is a very long bell shape and a yellowish-tan. The stem is very long about 4-6cm hollow bronze colored, hollow and has a slight twist to it.The gills are a rusty brown. The spore print is coming along but won't be black.Looks so far like brownish purple. They were growing by horse manure in the grass.

Me thinks Conocybe based on spore print.

in my opinion it is either Conocybe tenera or C. coprophila. C. lactea does not usually grow in manure. C. tenera groes almost everywhere including manure and C. coprophila grows in dung. is the cap markedly viscid when moist?

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I'll go with Conocybe, too.

I've been told at least twice by Dr. Orson Miller that Conocybes cannot be identified to species without a microscope.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the ID. The cap were not viscid at all, rather dry. Both times I have found them they were around horse manure.I am going to logging sites today and am hoping to find something good! The temps have been dropping lately so maybe a cyanescens will pop it's head up today for me.  If not I'm sure i'll have something new to post anyway. Good hunting to all!! Hope the storm isn't too bad for those on the southeast coast!

i just came in with a quite a bit of cubensis and copes here in central florida, so i think the storm didnt do anything bad, it helped.

basically all of the major Conocybe species are a complex of species that are very related except microscopically. so you are right it is probably impossible to id to species without a microscope.

C. coprophila has a slightly viscid cap when moist (slippy slippy).
