mushroom compost questions

Hi
I am newbie, trying to make some mushroom compost with this formula http://whatbethat.com/%20mushroomhandbook/index.html . This is my first time. I live in the city, so I don't have access to horse manure. What I could find are bagged fermented cow manure, and fermented chicken manure, gypsum, cereal meals, etc.
Is it ok to skip the horse manure? Or are there any substitute?
Because the blood meal are smelly. Are there substitute to it as well ?
I could order some wheat straw, but could I use coco peat instead? The link said the wheat straw is for providing the main carbohydrate source, so could I use other rich carbohydrate source such as rice?
Finally, am i missing anything? I am a beginner urban farmer.
Thank you in advance.

As a small scale grower are you really interested in making 200lbs of substrate at a time? This is a sub more for buttons or manure loving mushrooms. Like psilly said what sort of mushroom are you looking to grow? Most types you dont need to make compost you can just buy whatever you need to spawn to and skip the smell and hassle of making mushroom compost

Exactly. If you are just growing cubes and live in the city with no access to poo then just use coir. It is easy and works great. Hell I have access to poo but still choose to use coir for its price and ease of use but there again I have no idea what you are wanting to grow.

Thank you for the prompt reply, I am looking forward to grow some portabello mushroom.
Could I just use garden compost mix with other ingredient (and without the composting process) such as cereal meals, bagged fermented chicken manure, and other high carbohydrate source for mushroom cultivation? Because the process of making mushroom compost doesn't sounds feasible for small amount (under 10kg?) in urban city, isn't it?

You need large amounts of substrate to make compost properly. You have to have large amounts for the heat to build up and work at composting your material. For a small scale port grow I would suggest buying some compost cause its going to be difficult to make in a city with out any land

Don't listeb to the sating you need lots of material.
a 55 gallon drum can be turned into an easy composter. just roll to mix.
as far as replacing horse manure, cow would work. chicken is high in nitrogen so it would take less compared to horse and cow.
search for compost by user agar. There is tons of info.
remember, when making compost for mushrooms think about the c:n ratio, (carbon:nitrogen)
its fun and easy. Good luck

Im pretty sure a compost pile has to be at least certain dimensions for it to work properly for mushrooms.
TMC Pile dimensions should be 5-6 feet wide by 4-6 feet high. The shape should be rectangular or square

I usually rely on TMC or MMGG for my mushroom needs...

Piles should be that big to retain heat and moisture. however they do not have to be. and the barrel retaind heat and moisture, which increases with microbial activity.
