You can see mushroom spores dropping!

I had no idea you could see them with the naked eye. I went outside a few minutes ago with a high power LED Flashlight to go check on some Pearl Oysters that started pinning a few days ago... They are still small and the edges of the caps are not turned flat or up at all on any of them yet.
I noticed some sort of smoke looking stuff wafting around in the air then took a closer look. I tracked it down to coming from underneath the gills of the mushrooms! There is a steady cloud of spores coming from under the gills of all of them! Even the tiny buggers...
Gonna go take a look tomorrow night and see if the spore release amount starts to increase. So much for Oysters not starting to drop spores until a specific size/shape!!!

Lucky? Ha... This is making me rethink fruiting too many Oysters in my mushroom building. Oh well, can just move them outside if I develop an allergy.
I wonder if my camera can pick them up... Ill try a tripod and a long duration exposure with the flashlight beam passing the gills tomorrow.

Yep, looks just like that... Cool picture!
So, is there any way to tell the point where Oysters start dropping spores? By shape, size, or time... Not by using a high power flashlight and checking for floating spores.

You want to look at the edge of the cap, pick them right before it uncurls, the sooner the better.
The younger they are when you harvest them, the longer shelf life they will have.
They will be releasing spores the whole time they are growing, it's just the bulk of the spore load comes when they uncurl.
Here is that pink oyster video, you cant see them very well with the youtube upload because of the plastic behind the block, but you get the idea.

Had to revive this thread. I didn't get around to harvesting this shiitake block on time, and when I checked on it this morning I thought there was a spider web drifting by or something, so I blew it away. Watched a perfect stream of little spores drop right back out from the gills. It was really cool to watch. I caught it in some pics, see the little stream drifting out to the right of the big guy?

Guess I'll have to be more careful about harvesting these on time!

Yeah there were some gnarly looking ones, more than I would expect considering I didn't supplement!

Weird that you didnt supplement and still got mutants. How much grain did you use to inoculate, and what strain are you using?

I use a whole quart of grain spawn per bag, but it's a larger block than normal (9 cups fuel pellets) since I got these XL bags. It's an unknown warm weather strain I got from a member here. Got a block alongside it of the spore depot strain though, and it got some muties as well. I guess the whole quart of spawn might be pushing the limits of what shiitake likes

I guess it is too much spawn. Still kind of weird though with no bran.

We used to use a whole jar like you and we would have to let them sit for months to not get mutants.
Cool picture though! Not an easy thing for a camera sensor to pick up.
