I am not positive. It is showing all the key signs of one though, the pores, the brownish texture on the top of the fingers with almost pure white on the under side, was it growing from a solid thick tuber like base as well as from under an oak?

Nice find, remember that tree for next year. That is if you like the taste of that mushroom. They pop up in the same spots for years.

I would advise against keeping it in that plastic bag (if you are), wrap it in some paper towels or newspaper. Plastic bags seem to speed up decomposition on mushrooms for some reason.

If you cut it off at ground level they will fruit under the same tree for many years. Leaving them to mature was a good call they start to get a brown coloration on the top when they are more or less full grown. Did you try the one you found yet?

I have found a filthy Maitake after a thunderstorm that was impossible to get the dirt out of, it had grown right into the underside of the mushroom. I tried soaking in water and everything. They seem to fond of getting dirty. Here are few pics of my most recent Maitake find, its a little wilted from being in the fridge for almost a week is it edible even with that yellow schmutz on the underside?

that looks pretty gnarly dude
parts of parts might be salvageable. the brown edging is indicative of age for sure. they just sort of generally look old and shitty dude. if you really wanted to you could cut around the bad parts for the healthy meat.
but personally i wouldnt eat that.
a lot of mushroom "poisonings" are just from spoiled food...

Yeah I was thinking it was on its way out even when I first found it. I found a nice big oak and buried bits around the base, wishful thinking?

Very nice.
Put them in the freezer! :yikes:
I would not freeze them. unless you have sauteed them first.
But what do I know? Not much.

I have heard to cook them before freezing aswell, I have no experience trying personally though a friend freezes enough to eat through winter I'll have to find out how he does. Nice finds
