Hi All,
This is my first time growing King Oysters. I used pasteurized wheat straw and I layered each jar with one quart of rye berry spawn. The jars took a long time to finish the spawn run. And then the logs took 5 weeks to start pinning. Here they are 7 days into fruiting. The original pins still aren't that big, but new ones have begun in the past few days. Can you take a look and tell me what you think? Is it normal for them to grow this slow? I have been keeping them between 60 degrees and 70 degrees, very humid, not a lot of FAE because I had read somewhere that they grown thicker stems if you don't give them a lot of FA. They are parked in front of a sunny window in a portable greenhouse. Is it normal for the caps to be of various shades of tan and taupe?

Really . . . they look okay? I thought maybe there are too many started and I needed to knock some off. The reason I thought that is because I've seen them grown in a jar, just one mushroom per jar. But on a log you can have a bunch?
Also, any idea why the caps are of various colors?

I personally would cull some off so that you have a select healthy few to grow but some folks say it is not necessary. The different colors will go away with age.

looking good yo!
but yeah, that took very long.... i have some agar jars standing now where the king oyster started to fruit from after 3 weeks from cloning, but from straw you would expect it faster after full colonisation. how long did it take to colonise?

Hold up I'm wrong.
It was 4 weeks 1 day for the straw to colonize and begin pushing pins.
It was 3+ weeks for the grain to finish spawning.

Thanks Guys 
I posted this on the Contamination Forum but I thought I should also post it here:
When I checked on them this morning, the end of one of the logs was growing a white fur. I opened the front flap of the portable greenhouse to take photos and left it open for 10 minutes or so and then noticed that the "fur" seems to be receding. Was this just a FA issue?

Thanks Ganzig . . . that's a relief!
Well while I'm at it here's what my two jars of king oyster rye grain spawn look like. I've been so fixated on the fruiting chamber that I didn't realize these jars were looking "different" than what I'm used to. I inoculated them on 8/25. They took their sweet ass time to grow and spread. But now I'm worried they are contaminated? Or is this just too much growth gone wild? They have these cute little "trees" and clumps growing on top which you can see in the first photo. I put them in the refrigerator and await expert advice

I will be following this one. I have a bag of rye and sawdust 100% colonized with king. I had been keeping it in the dark because the guy I got the culture from told me they would not fruit unless it was 60-65f.....The kings are pretty tough. I had a contam in the bag, but it ate right through it(or so it seems )
Also, I have a jar with tapered neck like the ones in your photo. It is a solid mass, looks like yours, and I doubt I could get it out. I just dumped pasteurized sawdust on top it and put the lid back on. That was last night and it has already started to eat it up. I am going to see if I can get one or two straight out of the jar.

Ganzig I fruited Blue Oysters before these Kings. I started them at the same time but the Kings took so long that we had two Blue flushes before the Kings starting pinning lol.
I also had 4 jars of Blue Oysters started on rye grain. But suddenly bright red/orange appeared on top. Within a couple of days the bright color turned more mellow and then the white mycelium sort of covered up the orangey color. I have the four jars in the back of my car triple bagged ready to be thrown in the dumpster.
Maynard good luck to you also. I'm sure I can get the spawn out of the jars by banging them on our car tire. My last batch of grain looked similar and I got it out of the jars. But no harm in growing right out of the jars I'm sure . . . I've seen enough photos of single fruits per jar when it comes to Kings. This is my first time growing them and only my second time growing mushrooms period. My son and husband were dabbling in growing edibles and now I've taken over since they're busy doing other things.

Also, did the blue oysters have an unpleasant odor?
All the blues I have ever grown stank. That is why I stopped growing them.

Oh yeah I'm hooked lol.
I didn't notice a smell when we grew the Blues. But I did notice my chest got heavy from the spores So I'm looking for a sporeless oyster variety. I'm assuming the Kings won't be a problem as other people have mentioned they produce less spores. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to grow small caps.
