Lawyer's wig mushroom?
    #18874213 - 09/21/13 11:02 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I found these almost a year ago and never asked what they were.
Are they Lawyer's wig mushrooms? I thought it was a dead bird at first.
I didn't grab them because they were huge.
They also had a huge stipe (stem?) at the bottom

cheers

Looks like shaggy mane to me, but pics are not from enough angles to be sure.  How tall were they?

"The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

They're pretty common/consistent.  I have a patch that fruits under my motorhome every season.

They are delectable if you get them young - which your pics are.  They must be cooked immediately, inky caps begin to rot as soon as they sprout, it seems.

Which reminds me of the tragic tale of the time I thought I'd try to dry some.  Doh.

In my opinion, shaggy manes are one of the easiest to id edible shrooms.  I think it was the first one I learned, yikes, almost 40 years ago.

Shit, makes me wonder where the days went.

There's not much to them, they cook down a lot.  They don't even keep in the frig for a few hours.  With my close patches, I wait 'till I'm hungry then go harvest.

Don't bother if the cap edges have started to melt.
