T. Pachanoi advice required
    #18873590 - 09/21/13 07:57 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I mentioned in another post that I have acquired some T. Pachanoi cuttings. I've since measured them and found that three of them are around 80cm long and about 3.5inches in diameter. I was thinking that it would be better to cut these into smaller cuttings.

So the first question is:

1. For the best rate of success how should I divide the cuttings? Should I divide them all? Leave them as they are? Divide some and leave some whole? I just want to maximise the chances of getting at least one of these cuttings to grow. I'm a total beginner at gardening so I want the odds to be well and truly in my favour.

I have divided a fourth cutting because it had an existing cut that was quite deep. I've placed both pieces next to the window where they will get indirect sunlight for the day. My house is quite bright, in that you don't need any lights on during the day to see well.

Second question:

2a. Where is the best place to put the fresh cuttings while they heal up?

2b. Where is the best place to keep the large cuttings while I work out what to do with them? Because they are so big I have them lying on the floor next to the back door so they are getting indirect sunlight.

The people I bought the cuttings from were kind enough to mark which end to place in the ground. However, on inspection I have noticed irregularities in their marking placement. To my untrained eye it seems that they did not consistently mark the bottom. The problem is that two of the cuttings do not have tips so I cannot tell easily which is the top and which is the bottom.

Third question:

3. How can I tell which end is which? I was thinking of just waiting to see where the roots grow out of because I've noticed that some guys just place the cactus in sunlight until it roots. Is this an appropriate method?

I estimate that the cuttings were made about 1-2 weeks ago. As far as I know they have been kept outside in a shaded area for most of that time. It has been raining quite a lot in that time so they are definitely not dehydrated. This is confirmed by the freshness of the piece that I have already divided.

Fourth question:

4. How long can I leave the cuttings lying around in the house before my chances of propagating start diminishing?

I know there's a lot of questions but I'm really quite anxious to achieve success with these. Thanks in advance for any advice you may share.

1-I don't like to cut my cuttings at less than one foot. Smaller cuttings will still root, but they take WAY longer to root and to grow than foot long cuttings. I think you lose more on account of the slow growth than you gain from the higher number of them.

Once they get established, put on some growth and start to pup, then you can cut them to propagate them.

2-I usually just prop them up against my fence which is mostly in the shade but gets a bit of sun. I find if you keep them too long in too dark a place they will often sunburn easily when introduced to the sun, which slows further growth considerably.

3-On many cacti, the areoles will have a V shaped depression near them. You want the V upright as it looks, not upside down V. It should sit above the areole, not below it. I've even heard of people planting them upside down and them still growing. You can also plant them horizontally "log style".

4- They can sit around for months or even a year or more probably. They will get more and more dehydrated and will regrow much more slowly if they sit that long. A couple/few months is fine though as long as they aren't in the sun.

Thank you for answering my questions. I will put some outside and leave some inside. Will leave one long one and divide the others. Hopefully in a few months time I will report back with tales of great success....
