i didnt have very much just to be safe:

i would say each of those pieces was a good solid three bites. i have a toooon leftover which i am going to cook with capers, anchovies, and white wine tmrw.

i actually overcooked them a bit not knowing how long they would take to cook, they were a little bit dry/tough on the outside so im going to keep that in mind next time.

I've only found rotten ones so far,  but as soon as I find some beautiful eaters they're ALL MINE.

Finally had some luck today

Can anyone ID that stump?  I suck at tree ID's, but I really wanna eat these they were PRISTINE, no bugs, no rot, super soft and tender.  Mmmmm....

EDIT:

Oh yeah here's something I found on the whole poison thing.  So it's actually different species I guess?

Quote:

Editor’s Aside: Recent mycological detective work has revealed differences in what was once considered to be just one species–there are in fact a handful of distinct species of Laetiporus in North America.2 Tom Volk briefly reviewed them back in 2001, but be aware that many field guides haven’t caught up yet with this improved taxonomy. In our area (northeastern North America), Laetiporus huroniensis is morphologically almost identical to Laetiporus sulphureus — the two can best be distinguished by where they grow and what they grow on. The conifer-loving Laetiporus huroniensis of the Great Lakes seems to cause poisoning more often than true L. sulphureus, and may also sometimes interbreed with the latter, making it even more difficult to distinguish one species from another. In western north America, true Laetiporus sulphureus does not occur, but at least two lookalikes do: Laetiporus gilbertsonii (on eucalyptus, and more frequently implicated in poisonings) and Laetiporus conifericola (on conifers). If you are unlucky, or sensitive to whatever unidentified toxin is in these, you may experience vomiting, chills, and perhaps mild hallucinations–I haven’t heard of any deaths. Yet there are many (probably over 90% of you) who eat these species with impunity, so it’s hard to know what to advise, except caution.

You will probably get better answers in the hunting and ID forum since most of us in gourmet grow more than we hunt.  Let me know by pm if you want it moved.

I eat a ton of cotw off conifers and never have negative reaction. It seems more edible mushrooms come with a warning of potential negative reactions than not. Alot of it is probably allergies that vary person to person.

As far as the types of trees, the cotw supposedly is able to absorb toxins from the trees. Im not sure how often this actually happens but its likely many cases are just allergic reaction / specimens past their prime.

I would just start with a small test sample if you find some on eucalyptus or cedar and want to eat it.

Ate some things tonight and just got back from bike riding.
This thread is hilarious. Ha ha

I did get sick from mushrooms once.  Green spored lepiota.  Ugh.  Horrible 6 hours of million mile used motor oil steadily flowing from my ass while throwing up egg yolk.  Naked in 3 girls bathroom who I had met only a few hours before.  Thank god they took care of me.  Good night guys.

If it had green spores it was Chlorophyllum molybdites, it causes more mushroom poisonings than any other species..

That really sucks ive heard poisoning by that species is especially bad. It wont kill you but will make you wish you were dead. I bet your more carefull identifying your mushrooms after that experience.

That experience was horrible.  I was 22 then and fresh into mushrooms. Two days later I bought my first identification guide.  The following day I was weak, but the days after that I felt so amazing, so cleansed. For years, even the smell of those nasty fuckers made me queasy.

I didn't see any leaves, it was a pretty well dead stump.  My wife swore it was hemlock at first but we looked at it again when we walked by and the bark on another piece of it looked more like nearby oaks.

Meh, I'm eating it anyway.  They're too perfect to let 'em go to waste.  I think I'm gonna fry them, probably start with just a few pieces.  I'll report back if I have any negative reactions.

Sauteed up with some scrambled eggs this morning for the trial run.  No problems at all, and man were they good!  I can't wait to try 'em fried later.

Yeah, my wife did all the cooking but I only got her to try one bite

A lil' squeamish about the shrooms but she's one hell of a cook!

It's funny how afraid most people are to eat stuff that doesn't come from a grocery store.

I always approach eating wild mushrooms with some level of anxiety,  I don't know the whole reason behind it,  because I know my ID is dead on,  and besides that, most poisonous mushrooms only result in gastrointestinal upset,  but those first few bites I'm always a bit nervous about.
