Mono Tub Question.

As I've noticed some people wrap their mono tub's in a black trash bag while they are colonizing, and then I've seen that some people don't.
Is it alright if a mono tub gets some indirect day light while it is colonizing?
I've tried looking on the search feature and couldn't find much.

Light is not an issue. Most are wrapping their tubs to prevent FAE, instead of taping their holes

I have seen people write that colonizing your mono tubs in complete darkness is unnecessary and I have also read that indirect light will actually improve colonization times as well. So there is no need to colonize in complete darkness.
Just make sure you tape up your holes with micro spore tape.

What? When trying to prevent FAE why would you use a breathable tape? Sorry but this is the stuff that confuses us new guys... Micro spore on Jar's your knocking up, and flaming needle red hot and shoving through is what RR says he does, but this? Sorry too lazy right now to plug that thread.

Light is beneficial to colonization. Its better not to shut it out of light during your spawn run.

Micropore will give GE, not FAE. People used to (and some people still do) use it as contam filters on their jars even. I wouldn't necessarily recommend using micropore or really anything but a trash bag or duct tape, but it would probably work.

Thanks Mush!
So the tub's would only be pushing C02 out, and not enough O2 to matter coming in?

I agree with Mush, no need to let the tub breathe during colonization. I use the waxy feeling blue masking tape with good results, its easy to work with and is a lot easier to remove than duct tape.

Oxygen is necessary. I'm not sure any mushroom grows anaerobically. Gas exchange will allow gasses in and out, so that CO2 doesn't choke out your mycelium and that new oxygen can be consumed. Fresh air exchange is a large amount of new air that is coming into the fruiting chamber, which causes evaporation from the substrate, which is a major pinning trigger.

Air leaking in the lid is not an issue. The imperfect lid allows for GE. Your monotub will produce heat and CO2 and will be moving out.

You don't need micropore tape. Just tape.
You don't need to put it in a bag either.
Do some searching on indirect sunlight. Many people say light is beneficial in all stages of growth, but that may not be completely true for sunlight. Sunlight has a much wider spectrum than the usual 6500K lights we use indoors. I can't speak with authority on the subject, but it seems UV may have negative effects on developing mycelium.
