Finally! Psilocybe Semilanceata
    #18872171 - 09/21/13 01:26 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Had my first proper find today that has resulted in over 100 liberty caps, I found 2 in a different place around a week ago.

They were found right in the middle of England. Very early for them round here and its only just begun by the looks of things; a few of the mushrooms still have the partial veil and a lot of them very small.

More pics will be taken later when I get chance if anyone is interested in seeing

Yeah, these were all found deep in long grass so hands and knees was a must. None could be saw observing from a standing up position, grass had to be swept in order to find them. The biggest cluster I found was 11 baby ones! In around a week or 2 they should be poking through the grass and easier to spot. There is around 120 altogether but in a week or two I think there will be double that amount.

Like I said though it is very early round here for them especially on low ground.

And I'm sure you'll find some Ganzig :goodluck:

I'll update this thread with the dry weight, they should be done in another day or two! :mushroom2:

Thanks man.

Heres two more pics just for you. Have no idea where the caps gone to it but the stem is showing a lot of bruising!

The one on the right is example of where partial veil is present

That little guy was a great sacrifice for a shroomery photo, but next time, let them mature! And if you are gonna pick 'em small so we can see, take better photos! Just helpful criticism. Don't listen to me. :dawerp:

The area I got these from are normally rampant with hunters so if I never got these somebody else would :tongue2: for the record and I was quite surprised at this, out of all these mushrooms- 120~ I never saw a single different specimen. Strictly libs, which is why I think it is heavily hunted! All caps were flicked so more should be expected in a week or two. There was still plenty more area I could have searched but I didn't have too much time so I'm gonna go back pretty soon to get the rest :smirk: and in a few weeks all the immature ones that were too small to see will be much bigger and ready to pick :mushroom2:

Sorry about the bad photos Hashfinger I'm lucky I got them at all because my batteries have ran out on my camera and I got no spare AA's

I will post more pics tomorrow after I got some batteries but most of them will be semi dry

 No dude. Rampant hunter after rampant hunter leaves the whole patch dead. Someone was probably leaving them to mature, and you went and nabbed them! Those other hunters would probably rip you a new one for picking pins and thinking "flicking" caps does anything to release spores. Spores are released by basidia via a differential internal pressure. Flicking isn't going to eject the mature spore, but it might shake out a few here and there that were already ejected hanging out on the gills. A mature fruit is ejecting millions of spore per hour, so there is no competing with that... best to leave things to mature, even leave a few to rot into the ground for good karma. Sorry if i'm coming off harsh, its just hard to watch someone possibly rape a patch out from under other hunters.

I'm confused as to why you went into so much detail.

I understand about flicking the caps doesn't really help but I was told to "flick and pick" so I did. And picking 5 or so immature libs isn't exactly a bad thing because they were in clusters of bigger ones so I'm sure the desired amount of spores that needs to keep circulation going were released anyway, I was excited and I picked pretty much every lib I saw apart from the very tiny ones, sorry for being such a bad guy

Also, I highly doubt that any hunters were leaving the small ones to mature. Although it is heavily hunted it is not hunted just yet, like I said it is very early for them and I think me and my relative who helps me out found these first, the other hunters I speak of probably won't hit the patch till October but I'm not to sure.

Lastly, I assure you that I didn't "rape the patch out from under other hunters" or nab any. A lot of tiny ones were left like I said, but the 5~ I picked were just due to excitement.

Peace.

Yes yes, you're fine, i'm fine, we're fine. Again, I wasn't really getting at you, just saying what needs to be said and going into detail so maybe other noobs seeing this will understand. You're right, you definitely weren't patch raping because I can tell you picked a nice flush and most of the fruits in your haul are very nice! I know the excitement man... I'll go ahead and say it as well, my favorite fruits to eat when doing a journey are on the less-mature side of the spectrum. Around here, we pick Psilocybe caerulescens, and it can be very stressful for "suburban hunters" to have to deal with noobs picking immature weilii that would have ended up weighing 3 times as much when mature. However, I really like the levels of alkaloids when they are about like this.

Again, sorry to come off all harsh and whatnot. Hope you find THAT many more libs just because of my comments! Lol

What do you mean "other noobs" just kidding; Yeah I totally understand, I just wanted you to realize it was down to excitement and not ignorance/bad antics. It was my first proper haul so I may have gone overboard with picking a few pins. I Was only looking for about an hour also so good result imo

And man, I'd love to have that excitement multiplied finding other Psilocybes, I'm currently attempting to grow Cubensis which is extremely exciting to watch but apart from that I doubt I'll find/take another Psilocybe so count yourself lucky having the chance to find weilii and caerulescens etc.

Happy shroomin dude and don't forget to view tomorrow because new pics should be up along with the totaled dry weight! Thanks for all the comments Hashfinger  :mushroom2::thumbup:

Dry weight in the end was 5.2g. 120~ shrooms altogether.

Found 80 more today in the same spot, pics will be up tomorrow along with dry weight if anyone's interested.

Also, one question; likewise with the blue bruised one on the right (the one with the battered stem but the one I found today isn't as battered) one of the libs has a very thick stem, like double, maybe triple the size of the standard ones, it also feels a little different. There is bluey green bruising on the cap and it is heavily bruising like the one on the picture below.

Does anyone know why this is? Is it just an abnormality?

It is like the one on the right but a little different.

They do have quite a variable stature, I suspect largely owing to micro-climatic differences.
