Popular Underground Drug Market Shuts Down for 'Security Reasons'
    #18870827 - 09/21/13 04:39 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Tis a sad day. I think the competition for SR was good.

It just became a little harder to buy drugs online. After launching this past April, the drug market Atlantis became one of the most popular places to buy and sell illegal drugs on the Dark Net. Today Atlantis announced it's shutting down because of "security reasons," which should freak out a lot of inhabitants of the shadier places of the internet.

The Underground Website Where You Can Buy Any Drug Imaginable

Like the notorious Silk Road, Atlantis was a sort of eBay for illegal substances. After launching in April, it reached over $500,000 in sales this past June and, with a slick marketing campaign and an active social media presence, was hoping to surpass the Silk Road as the biggest Bitcoin-powered drug den on the anonymous Tor Network.

That's come to an end with this Facebook from Atlantis' official page:

Dear all users,

We have some terrible news. Regrettably it has come time for Atlantis to close its doors. Due to security reasons outside of our control we have no choice but to cease operation of theAtlantis Market marketplace. Believe us when we say we wouldn't be doing this if it weren't 100% necessary.

Due to the urgency we are allowing all users to withdrawal all their coins for one week before the site, and forum, are shut down permanently. Please remove all of your coins, these will not be recoverable after one week from now. Anything remaining in your accounts will be donated to a drug related charity of our choosing.

We wish to thank all of you for making Atlantis a great and memorable place to trade on. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Best wishes,
The Atlantis team

It's been a turbulent few weeks for the collection of websites hosted on the anonymity-protecting Tor Network, known as the Dark Net. Atlantis' shutdown comes just over a month after the FBI took down the web hosting company Freedom Hosting, a major player on the Dark Net, for child porn distribution by using specially-designed malware. And a popular seller on another underground marketplace, Black Market Reloaded, was apparently busted as well.

Three months ago, the anonymous CEO of Atlantis responded to concerns that they were becoming too public in an Ask Me Anything thread on Reddit, writing:

We want to bring attention to the site and bring our vendors more buyers. Law enforcement is going to be aware of us (and probably already is) regardless of the way we choose to put our product out there.
It appears Atlantis received more attention than they could handle. Silk Road, meanwhile, is still booming

There might not have been any security reason (well no new security reasons) it looks to me that the owner got paranoid from all the attention they were getting from their website. It doesn't seem like there is news of SR shutting down or any news of internet related drug arrests so .

Although maybe I've just missed some news on internet related drug arrests .

Without asking for too much info from people who know the ins ands outs of these fascinating websites, IS there a way people can make purchases and REALLY believe that everything is secure? Even with encryption and whatever else there is out there I just could never trust buying something illegal off the internet and having it shipped to a physical location, to be picked up by me. And we know damn well the law has accounts on that site as well. I dunno. But again, I'm not asking info on how. I just wanna know IF it really is possible to feel 100% secure while operating on a website.

No it's not really possible to feel 100% secure when you're buying drugs ANYWHERE. AFOAF has some coke to sell, you gonna feel safe showing up to this guys house to pick up? It's similar to that. You can take precautions but in the end the drug could very well be fake or the cops are waiting outside the post office.

This sucks though. I found a good LSD hookup with a good price on Atlantis and they shut down now :frown:

I'm sure the cops have more important things to do than to wait outside a post office for a random a drug user to pick up their supply, and they aren't able to go through your mail without a warrant. There may be risks to SR but the risk are less than trying to buy from some shady dealer you haven't met before.

So eventhough the idea of buying drugs of the internet sounds dangerous it's actually an option with one of the fewest risks (at the moment)

Haha. Like what ? stake out the weed dealer down the street  ? believe me bro. There are many many cops that don't have anything better to do.

Atlantis was alright, I heard BMR went down a few weeks prior or just before.  SR seems to be thriving.

Did anyone do the math yet?  Was it a six month honey pot stint?

I've heard the DEA or Feddies only need six months of investigation in order to ensure the indictments stick.

Ordering doses in the mail has been the safest thing since 1986

So prove it then. Post up some articles of people busted for ordering small amounts drugs in the mail. Go ahead sit outside my house 3 days until I open it, prove I ordered it. Even if I sign for it, doesn't mean I ordered it. Believe me "bro" even the intercepted at customs packages result in no investigations. Domestically its almost impossible to get caught.
I have been following the online drug scene since the mid 90s, people just don't get caught sending drugs in the mail unless it's a lot. Even in the pre bit coin days cops were unwilling to stake out PO boxes of sellers FFS.

BMR was always bigger and better than atlantis but its a shame even one of them got shut down. I suspect the owner made a pile and decided to bail before he got careless and busted. SR is bigger than all of them put together.

Life is full of risks, you pay your money and take your chances.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
