Sensational Norwegian find of Gymnopilus luteofolius - 6.000 fruitbodies!
    #18871342 - 09/21/13 09:30 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Link to the article at NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation):

http://www.nrk.no/nordnytt/fant-sopp-som-kan-inneholde-lsd-1.11246261

I hereby translate parts of the text:

The golden-gilled bitter mushroom (Gymnopilus luteofolius) it is called, and possibly
contains psilocybin, a psychedelic tryptamine found in various species of mushrooms,
among them fleinsopp (liberty caps, my note), and is similar to LSD.

This mushroom has never been found in Europe previously. Now it has been found
in Lavangsdalen in Tromsø.

Mycologist Kolbjørn Mohn Jenssen was on his way to a lecture about mushrooms
arranged by the local mycologial society, when he came across the mushroom.

He was on his way to the lecture, and due to traffic lights set up because of
roadworks, he was forced to stop and thus discovered the mushrooms.

In fact the roadworks is the reason for the mushroom's fruiting. A pile of woodchips
that has been laying beside the road during last winter has been furiously decomposing,
and the subsequent high temperatures in the substrate has resulted in mushroom growth.

The mycologist states he has talked to several people that claims substrate temperatures
as high as 70 degrees centigrade. He says, that this rare mushroom has grown there, so far
north, is nothing short of a sensation.

The town's museum and mycological society reported more than 6.000 fruitbodies in
4 piles of woodchips.

Awfully membranous annulus. I doubt this is the same species we call luteofolius in NA.

Or perhaps... This is true luteofolius, and what we are calling is not? I really don't know, but you're right about the annulus being so well defined, maybe its just because they were in chips? Is the annulus usually that high up the stipe on luteofolius?

I want to contact these people and request full microscopy proving their findings, i want to see the results. The very well could be G. lutes for sure, some sort of active gym closely related to that, the macro features could be from the distribution on the map. I thought people find luteofolius in europe all the time... ? Cool stuff though, get out there lol find some, scope :awepreciation::robawet::congrats:
Cool info though, thanks!

Wouldn't it make more sense to assume they are Gymnopilus purpuratus if Gymnopilus luteofolius has never been found in Europe?

I'll try to inquire directly to the mycological society up there, and ask if they've
got it properly scoped and analyzed.

It's very membranous as opposed to being submemranous, fugacious. That's not why I think it's probably a different species than what we call luteofolius in NA.
