No, the time is right, but the habitat is wrong (assuming you were looking for liberty caps). These are a wood-loving species.

I live around London. All I can say is don't bother hunting yet. At the moment there hasn't been enough rain and the temperature is too high at the moment (around 17-22). Best time to go out is when temp is around 12-15 max and has been raining for a while. So basically, October.

Remember liberty caps have:
- A very striking pointed nipple. Although some liberty caps don't always have this, I'd say discard if they don't have a striking nipple to reduce bias.

- When you pull apart the cap, there is a jelly membrane covering it. Discard if it doesn't have this even if the texture of the cap is slimy.

- Make sure the stem is not straight. I have NEVER seen a liberty cap with a perfectly straight stem, it is always wobbly and jagged.

- The stem should be a creamy beige in colour.

- The gills should be a grey colour and gives a purple spore print. Not brown, not black, not "think it looks a bit purple" - its purple. Discard if it isn't.

- The edges of the cap should have a distinctive black edge. Look for it.

- Liberty caps are found in grassy areas (fields) which is often grazed upon (mainly sheep and sometimes cows, however horses damage the ground too much). Furthermore, the ground should stay fairly moist for the whole year, even in summer.

If the mushroom DEFINITELY has these characteristics be sure to take a pic and share it to get it identified. I've been trying to stress in the list the power if bias in incorrect identification. Although there are exceptions to characteristics in all organisms, if you want to be more accurate in your finds then try to stick to the text book descriptions.
