Night-time hunger
    #18856475 - 09/18/13 01:03 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I was at the doctor's the other day because I have a very strange problem that is affecting my ability to sleep.

I had a chat with him, apologising first in case this was actually a trivial matter, but it wasn't to me. Every night without fail, whether I've had weed or not, I get this insane hunger. It starts after 11PM. I feel it throughout my entire body, I just need to eat so badly even if my stomach is full. I get weak like I haven't eaten in a long time. When I lie in my bed my body can't rest, it feels like doing physical work on low blood sugar when actually I'm in my bed and I've had a good meal less than a couple of hours ago. I lose hours of sleep over it because I end up lying in bed awake until I eat. It's hard to eat sometimes because I'm usually already full. Then I wake up in the morning feeling sick because I ate too late.

The doctor took some blood from me and told me to contact the clinic in a week for results, but it may just be poor habit, that my body has become accustomed to eating at that time. Thing is it started out of the blue, I had never been in the habit of eating that late before. Anyway he wasn't very helpful offering suggestions.

Has anyone else had this and managed to find out what was causing it?

What time are you eating dinner /your last meal of the day?

Could you try drinking a protein shake or something or do you eat food? Do you eat junk? If you're going to eat that late, atleast eat something like fruit or something that wont turn into fat especially if you're going to sleep right after.

You might have that kind of diabetes where you have to eat all the time or you feel weak. I've managed to deal with it by trying to drink atleast a half gallon of whole milk a day, eating good meals, going to the gym, etc. I live in a corrupt household where there are stupid rules so I can't always eat that often. I have a job though so I'll get to eat more when I get paid. Do you get a lot of stagnant energy, as in if you lay down for a while, you feel a strong need to stretch or flex your muscles, and even when you do stretch/flex, it doesn't help that much so you have to get up and do pushups or other exercises to get it out? I get that almost every night, then I get some of my food to eat. Maybe you need to work out more?

I suggest not eating anything heavy in complex carbs/starches at least 3 hours before sleep. High blood-sugar levels lead to an excitatory response, which affects sleep. Complex carbs take a lot longer to break down than simple carbs...this leads to elevated blood sugar levels at night.

Try eating things low in glycemic index for nighttime snacking. You can make a shake with almond milk, what have you...and eat an apple. It's really high in fiber.

You don't need to eat  food at night...food is for energy:thumbup: save the good stuff for the daytime.

Diabetes was the only thing that came to mind when I was reading this thread... full but starving, feeling weak like you haven't eaten... low blood sugar

Have you been tested for Diabetes OP? Seriously man... sounds just like it

Here we go again. It's almost midnight, just dragged myself out of bed to try to eat because I feel soooo hungry but I'd much rather be asleep right now. I have the flu so it's hard to force something down. It's strange that all day I've barely eaten because of the flu and I've not had any hunger or hunger related weakness. It's only when I try to lie down and sleep that I'm overwhelmed with hunger. My daytime diet and eating patterns seem to make absolutely no difference, nor does appetite suppression from illness.

I have been tested for diabetes many times in my life (once since this problem started over a year ago) but all blood and urine tests come back clear every time. Also I got my most recent blood results and those are completely normal. I'm going to have to make a follow-up appointment, it's beginning to get ridiculous.

You could be dehydrated.

Try this.

Have a 32oz. glass of ice cold water near your bed.

When you start to feel hungry, drink up.

I would also recommend that you take a multivitamin, and a B12 supplement everyday .

It could be parasites.  If you have a bad enough case of worms (roundworm/tapeworm - a lot more common than you might think) they have the ability to make you feel hungry even if you've just eaten.  They become very active at night once you lay down and steal all your nutrients.  Any GI issues? Restless legs? Muscle spasms? Teeth grinding? Or any other symptoms (even if they've been there for a while) that are so minor you haven't given much thought to?

Perhaps your mind is confusing sexual appetite for hunger on a subconscious level. The answer could be sex.

I drink like a fish, but I'll maybe give vitamins a try. I don't take any as of yet, all my vitamins come from my food. Nowadays crops are grown in such a hurry I doubt they're as nutrient rich as those our parents and grandparents used to eat. I wish I had a garden.

I don't know why the doctor didn't even think to mention this possibility. After looking for worms symptoms I seem to have lots of them, some that are quite distinctive to a parasite infection. I'll ask the doctor if they'd be willing to test for it.

Yeah to be honest doctors generally aren't very clued up on parasites in the western world.  Most of them seem to think it can happen in this part of the world.  Your doc should be able to do a stool sample, but even then it's not always reliable.

If you don't mind me asking, what other symptoms do you have? If you think it's a serious possibility I would check out the Curezone website.  Lots of info and knowledgeable people there.
