More odd amanitas
    #18866956 - 09/20/13 10:00 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Seems to fit with Amanita rubescens but I am probably way off.

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Where the pine needles from the tree line meet the grass on my lawn

Gills:
White detached

Stem:
thick hollow with one yellowish ring around the top of the volva

Cap:
1/2 inch - 2inch diameter white flesh

Spore print color:
White

Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.

Other information:
No scent to these at all. Not even a hint of mushroom odor. Growing in small groups of 1-4

Amanita muscaria var. guessowii seems like it could fit too, do you know how I can tell if the spores are ellipsoid without a microscope, I read it was possible in a post on here but it didn't mention how to do it.:badshroom:

Seems like you nailed that one. I'd bet I just knocked off some of the rings when I dug them up.
I found some of what I think to be brown agarics also. If you wouldn't mind taking a crack at these your input is always appreciated. They were growing close to the suspected A. frostiana.

Stem:4-5inches pretty much equal to diameter of cap. some fuzzy bits going down it

Cap: Dark brown center fading towards edges circular veil remnant pattern

Gills: White unattached close

There were 3 of them growing in a dense cluster in grass a few feet from multiple pines.

So A. amerirubescens are edible if properly prepared right but deadly if not?
Which characteristics made you lean towards frostiana over guessowi or faded flavivolva? Just out of curiosity.

a. rubescens is maybe most tasteful mushroom i ever tried, but i try not to tell it to people, because its too dangerous.
most amanitas have those characteristic patches, and your has some kind of veil or something.

That's exactly what I have found out researching them, multiple articles have said they are really good but not to bother. It seems almost impossible to undoubtedly ID an Amanita short of DNA analysis...:facepalm3: All three I found had veils, the one I was extremely careful digging up seemed to have a uniform collar around the top of the volva.

It is almost fully covered by the veil, it was just starting to split apart. Had to pick them a little young due to the lawn being mowed

These are my guesses...

1 Amanita crenulata
2 Amanita muscaria var guessowii
3 Amanita amerirubescens

#2 does seem to fit with lots of young ones I have seen in the Agaric thread, I wish I didn't remove the stem from the cap, the caps popped open over night I would bet I could of had a better picture of the vulva rings after it actually seperated. There's one more that may of survived the mower I will have to check that out.
