How do you provide GE for trays and does it matter how fill they are?

I'm thinking of making a couple of trays instead of a monotub for my next grow, I was going to use bustubs and cover them in either foil or saran wrap, but would they get enough GE doing this? I've seen others do it so I would assume it works, but.. well, I just don't understand where the GE is coming from?
Also does it matter how much you fill them up in regards to the space between the top of the tray and the bottom? I'm not asking in regards to substrate depth, but do they need any kind of a lip or can I fill them up most of the way only leaving a half inch or so?

When I do trays I cover them with foil and poke small holes in the foil for gas exchange. Maybe one toothpick-sized hole every 3 to 4 inches.
You can safely fill them up most of the way. Just have a small amount of headspace to allow even gas exchange. Half an inch is plenty of headspace.

Do you not cover these holes with micropore tape or anything? Another concern with foil specifically is you can't tell when it's colonized, do you just wait 2 weeks and uncover?

Yep just use some micropore tape. Also, I'd go with the clear plastic wrap over tin foil.

Cool, well I'm going to be making a couple of coir based tubs/trays in a few days I guess. Was going to try fruiting them by just laying some plastic sheeting overtop as opposed to using a shotgun as well, we'll see how it goes.

Should work, I've had to fruit some trays in big ziplock bags when I ran out of tubs to use.

Yeah, I guess plastic wrap would be better because it lets light in. I use translucent trays so I guess I never worried about the foil being opaque.
I suppose Micropore tape couldn't hurt, but I just leave the holes open. Spawn runs aren't done in sterile conditions anyway.
I'm pretty sure that foil with tiny open holes in it is what RR does in his videos.
Good luck with the plastic fruiting tent. I've done that before and it worked but required more attention to misting and fanning than I would have liked.

When I made trays to put in my sgfc I covered them with foil and poked holes in it. I didn't put tape over it or anything. They did fine and yours will too if you use pasteurized substrate and clean spawn

Just curious if you happened to have tried micropore too, did you ever notice any difference in the speed of colonization between the two? I've always put micropore over it so I don't personally know if one has an advantage over the other.

I wasn't taping it for sterility purposes at all though, more for the higher co2 levels and less exchange.

I'm in the colonization faze on two trays , one with a non airtight snap on lid and another with foil covering it, and wondered myself wether I needed holes poked in the foil for GE or if the foil will provide enough on its own. I'll b keeping and eye on this thread.

Ah, gotcha. In that case, I guess it would depend how many holes you make and how big they are, so it would be hard to compare one person's experience with another's unless they use the same trays with the same amount of substrate and spawn and poke holes the same size in the same pattern.

My bad I wasn't meaning to compare one persons to anothers, I meant if anyone had happened to try both ways themselves personally and if they noticed any differences. Obviously only if they were using an isolate for both though.
